Paddock Quotables

When you have 43 cars running three wide and only a few inches apart, you need to be intelligent and not emotional. Like a good soldier, you have to be thinking at all times about when and where you're going to make your next move. Tempers and emotions need to be left in the drivers’ motorcoaches. One wrong or stupid move can cause a lot of damage, we saw that last year.

Thank you Felipe Massa!

What was expected to be a ho-hum Hungarian parade with the Formula One fraternity following Lewis Hamilton around in a well-organized single file... wasn't that at all. Instead, F1 turned in a spectacular thriller of a Grand Prix!

Ferrari's Felipe Massa - one lap lighter than his McLaren foe - made a rocket start and completed a spectacular pass on the outside of Turn One to take the lead on lap one. Though Hamilton seemed quicker, he slowly lost ground to the Ferrari driver. At the first pit stop the gap was 3.2 seconds.

On lap 18 Massa pitted, took on fuel and re-joined just ahead of Renault's Fernando Alonso. Hamilton pitted the following lap, and clearly took on a large load of fuel. His McLaren team setting him up for an extended stay on track to try to make up the ground when the Brazilian would pit for his second and final time.

Buemi Storms Sprint Win In Hungary, Swiss GP2 Driver On Top For Second Season Victory

Sébastien Buemi has dominated the field in scorching conditions this morning in race two at the Hungaroring, blasting by his fellow front row starter Andy Soucek to take a strong win ahead of the Spaniard and Bruno Senna. The win came as a result of the mounting pressure he put on his rival, with Soucek running slightly wide at turn 12 and handing a clear run through to the flag for the likeable Swiss driver.

At the start it was Soucek who came off the grid best, getting a great start when the lights went out to lead Buemi, Mike Conway and super starter Lucas di Grassi into turn one: the latter tapping the Briton as they entered the corner but both men held their lines ahead of Pastor Maldonado and Bruno Senna. The front two were in a class of their own, swapping fastest laps as they built a lead over di Grassi, whose fight with Conway spilled over when they came together at turn two on the second lap, with the Brazilian continuing but the Briton spinning around.

A beautiful race.

As for the weather, well that might be a little different.

The rain sure came down at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve multiple times throughout the scheduled 74 lap race, which in the end did not actually make it to the actual scheduled time frame.

The Canadian content put on a great show for their fans all day Saturday with their home town hero and past Formula One World Champion Jacques who led toward the middle stages of the race.

Hamilton On Hungarian Grand Prix Pole, McLaren Take Front Row

Hamilton On Hungarian Grand Prix Pole, McLaren Take Front Row

It is all smiles at McLaren, after Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton swept the front row.

During qualifying for Formula One’s Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton stomped the Prancing Horse cars into the ground again to claim his fourth pole of the season, 10th of his career and second pole in a row. Hamilton turned a lap nearly two and a half tenths quicker than all challengers, just to emphasis he wasn’t going to be beaten this weekend. For McLaren, it was also the third pole in a row for the legendary silver arrows.

Tomorrow, Hamilton will go for his fifth win of the season, and his third straight win – and become the first driver since Michael Schumacher in 2006 to win three straight Grand Prix.

“The pace of our cars is great.” Said a smiling Lewis Hamilton. “I think it’s a great day to have me and Heikki one-two, it’s about time we did that for the team.”

Interestingly, Hamilton once again admitted that he had made a mistake or he would have been even quicker. “Turn five I locked up the front wheel, and lost a bit of time.” Ferrari’s Felipe Massa put thumb to nose and demonstrated his disbelief, or dissatisfaction – however you might want to read that gesture.

Hungary GP: Formula One Practice 3 Results - Hamilton, McLaren Fastest
By Mike Sulka

The Formula One practice times at the Hungaroring continue to come down as the tight winding track gets rubbered in. At the top of the timesheets is McLaren's Lewis Hamilton who put his car's advantages in increasing horsepower, and traction control systems to great use with a lap of 1:20.228. The result was the best lap of the weekend so far.

Once again, Ferrari are nearly helpless to challenge. The best result the team could muster was a lap from Felipe Massa that was over three tenths slower. Yes... it is just practice, but its becoming clear that Ferrari's development of their F2008 is falling behind McLaren and fast.

Last week at the German Grand Prix, Timo Glock had a massive crash and then was ridiculously allowed out of the car under his own power. Thankfully, he was uninjured by the lax safety response. Today, Glock and Toyota had a great practice and were an amazing third quick overall. The last 3-4 Grand Prix, Toyota has been showing glimpses of a move forward, qualifying will soon reveal if this pace is for real.

Fourth quick was Hamilton's teammate Heikki Kovalainen, who Lewis perdicts will take pole. Is that a clue to the team's split strategy ?

Fifth quick was Nelson 'Don't call me junior' Piquet. While his two-time championship winning teammate Fernando Alonso was only able to run 11th overall. While Alonso downplayed the F1 rookie's first podium last weekend, is Piquet's increasing pace going to become a problem within the team ?

We shall see.

NASCAR Pocono Pole Goes to Johnson

NASCAR Pocono Pole Goes to Johnson
By Brad Gerhart

A week ago at the Brickyard Jimmie Johnson and Mark Martin shared the front row of the grid for the 400 miler. This weekend Johnson won his third Coors Light pole (168.215 mph), again with Martin right beside him (167.560 mph).

The pole award, his second at Pocono really did not mean too much to Johnson since there’s plenty of opportunities to pass at the 2.5 mile track, unlike many of the shorter ovals the series runs on. “You can pass here, you need a strong car,” said Johnson.

Although last Pocono 500 race winner Kasey Kahne also won from pole, he went through some tough times during the race, which nearly cost him the win.

“Kasey (Kahne) kicked our butts here last year. He just flat wore us out. I will keep a close eye on him tomorrow and hopefully we will have pace with him.”

Hungaroring: GP2 Race Preview - Monaco Without The Armco
By Rick Volman

Monaco without the Armco. That's the way the Hungaroring in Budapest Hungry has been described, evoking images of a tight and twisty track that affords little opportunity to pass and readily punishes those who err while making their way around this 14-turn 4-km circuit.

"There is an emphasis on the importance of qualifying and pit stop strategy at this race, because the only real chance to overtake at this track is at turn one," explained David Price, team principal for DPR.

That's a sentiment pole-sitter Romain Grosjean, the ART Grand Prix driver who currently sits third in the GP2 points tally, shared and the French driver added the pole is but one of four elements to pulling off a win against a competitive field.

"I really wanted to do this pole position because it's really important for a driver to be able to be the fastest in qualifying," he said. "For sure starting from pole is a good advantage here, so basically you need a good start and build a good lead, an easy pitstop and then an easy win.

Finland Rally: WRC Day One Results - Citroen, Loeb In Front

Citroën Total World Rally Team driver Sébastien Loeb has set the pace on the first day of Neste Oil Rally Finland, but the Frenchman has had to fight hard to keep ahead of Mikko Hirvonen (BP Ford). Loeb has won, jointly or outright, all but one of the 11 stages and has a 14.4 second advantage over the Finn after 131.70 competitive kilometres. Third position is held by Henning Solberg (Stobart Ford).

Rally Finland is one of the most specialised events on the calendar. High speeds on smooth flowing gravel roads are combined with spectacular jumps, which often hide bends over the crests. Precision driving and bravery are required and it is little wonder only six non-Finns have won the rally in 57 years.
