U.S. Falls To Denmark 3-1 In Final Match Of 2009


Three quick second half goals by Denmark canceled out a first half goal by Jeff Cunningham and provided the Danes with a 3-1 victory against the U.S in their final match of 2009.

Cunningham capitalized on a Danish mistake for the match’s first goal in the 26th minute, but three substitutes made immediate impacts by scoring for Denmark in the first 10 minutes after the break.

Atfer Hugo celebrated the qualification for the World Cup 2010 with the Portuguese national team, the striker is back in Bremen and wants to win in the Bundesliga. Werder Bremen face the german side SC Freiburg on Saturday. With a victory, Werder could be able to be on position one, as the leader Bayer Leverkusen plays on Sunday.

"We are close to the leader, and a victory could bring us to the top. I hope that I will play against Freiburg. The team is motivated and ready to win, and if we score a lot of goals, we could take the lead for at least one day" said Hugo Almeida.

Landon Donovan’s Curling Volley Wins 2009 Goal of the Year


Major League Soccer’s most spectacular individual plays were honored today as the LA Galaxy’s Landon Donovan won the 2009 AT&T Goal of the Year and Houston Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad was awarded the Degree Men Save of the Year. Click here for more on these awards.

On Aug. 8 Donovan struck a stunning left-footed volley that curled into the far left side netting past an outstretched Matt Reis to give the Galaxy a 1-0 lead over the Revolution. The play resulted from a clearance by the Revolution defense and with one swing of his left leg, Donovan struck a beauty for his first Goal of the Year award.

LA Galaxy’s Landon Donovan Named 2009 Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player


Adding another prestigious honor to his outstanding career, LA Galaxy forward Landon Donovan was named the 2009 Volkswagen MLS MVP today.

The 27-year old, nine-year MLS veteran receives the honor for the first time in his career. Widely considered as the best American player ever, Donovan added to his 2009 awards after being named to the MLS Best XI and the winner of the 2009 AT&T Goal of the Year.

MLS Announces 2010 Expansion Draft Rules for Philadelphia Union


The League’s 16th team, Philadelphia Union, will take another significant step toward building their club as the 2010 expansion side will participate in the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 25.

The Union, who recently unveiled their inaugural game kit, open their season in the MLS First Kick presented by Dick's Sporting Goods match on March 25 versus 2009 expansion club Seattle Sounders FC, 9:30 p.m. (ESPN2/Deportes, ESPN360.com).

Hugo Almeida Celebrates Qualification For The FIFA World Cup 2010


In the second play-off match for the qualification for the World Cup of 2010 in Africa, Portugal won against Bosnia by 1-0. With this result, the Portuguese National team qualified for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa. The match against Bosnia was decided after Raul Mireles scored in the 56th minute.

With the 1-0 victory in the first match, Portugal won the playoffs by 2-0.

ESPN’s week-long coverage of MLS Cup 2009 will culminate with the live, high definition telecast of Real Salt Lake FC vs. the Los Angeles Galaxy Sunday, Nov. 22, at 8:30 p.m. ET, from the Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field in Seattle. The title match will feature a Los Angeles team, led by Landon Donovan and David Beckham, in his first U.S. title match since joining Major League Soccer in 2007 from soccer powerhouse Real Madrid FC, vs. Real Salt Lake FC, captained by U.S. national team player Kyle Beckerman.

Alston to visit South Africa with Generation adidas


New England Revolution defender Kevin Alston, a member of Major League Soccer’s Generation adidas program, will travel to South Africa from Nov. 27 – Dec. 8 for a training trip that will include three matches, including two against reserve teams of two of South Africa’s top clubs. The participants will also attend several special events, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup Draw and the opening of the first FIFA Football for Hope Centre.

The Generation adidas team, which is comprised of some of the top young players in MLS, will depart from Washington, D.C., on Friday, Nov. 27, and will conduct its first of five training sessions in South Africa on Sunday, Nov. 29. The team will play three matches during the trip, including at least two against reserve teams from the Premier Soccer League, the top professional league in South Africa. Alston and the rest of the Generation adidas players will open with a match against the Orlando Pirates’ reserves on Monday, Nov. 30, while they’ll also face AJAX Capetown’s reserve team on Sunday, Dec. 6. An additional match is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 3, against an opponent which is yet to be determined.

ESPN2’s live coverage of the 2009 MLS Western Conference Finals Friday, Nov. 13, a 2 – 0 extra time victory by the Los Angeles Galaxy over the Houston Dynamo, was seen in an average of 538,000 television homes (700,000 people 2+), based on a 0.5 rating, making it the most-watched MLS telecast ever on the network.

The previous record was on Thurs., Aug. 23, 2007, in a regular-season match between Chivas USA and Los Angeles, seen in an average of 532,000 television homes (658,000 P2+), a 0.6 rating.

The U.S. Soccer Federation has announced initial details for U.S. Men’s National Team fans to apply for tickets for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Priority status for applying for tickets to the U.S. Men’s National Team matches in South Africa will be extended to members of the U.S. Soccer Supporters Club. Registration for U.S. Soccer SC is open now at ussoccer.com, and fans seeking priority status must join by Dec. 3, 2009, at 12 p.m. ET.

With the excitement of the final qualifier round reaching its peak this Wednesday, fans will still be able to immediately purchase their tickets for the 2010 FIFA World Cupâ„¢.

To meet the strong demand by the football fans especially in the qualified countries it was decided today to extend the second sales phase until 20 November 2009 so that supporters do not have to wait until the third and main ticket sales phase kicks off the day after the Final Draw on 5 December. Tickets can be purchased online via FIFA.com until midnight South African time (CET+1) and in South Africa also at FNB branches until end of business of banking outlets on the final sales day.

Mexican, U.S. Regular Season Champs To Square Off In Champions League Quarterfinals


Mexican regular season champion Toluca will face U.S. counterpart the Columbus Crew in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League, paired together Tuesday in the tournament’s Championship Round draw. Pachuca will face Comunicaciones of Guatemala, Pumas will take on Honduras’ Marathon and Cruz Azul will play Panama’s Arabe Unido in the other quarterfinals, with the Mexican sides all hosting the second legs of their respective series.

CONCACAF Deputy General Secretary Italo Zanzi conducted the draw with the assistance of Mary Lynn Blanks in the television studios of the confederation’s New York headquarters.

Five FC Dallas Players Travel To South Africa With Generation Adidas


Eric Avila, Bruno Guarda, Josh Lambo, Peri Marosevic and Brek Shea are among 18 Major League Soccer players traveling to South Africa, host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, for an 11-day Generation adidas trip.

The first stop for the Generation adidas athletes is the home of former South African President Nelson Mandela. Later, the players will attend the opening of the first FIFA Football for Hope Centre, the first of 20 centers part of an initiative to use the sport of soccer to bring positive social change to Africa and built in partnership with FIFA and streetfootballworld.

Ford Motor Company has announced that it will introduce the motor industry’s first inflatable seat belts in 2010, designed to enhance overall vehicle safety and provide better protection for back-seat passengers.

Ford’s inflatable rear seat belts – which will make their debut on the US best-selling Ford Explorer – spread the force of a crash over an area five times bigger than conventional seat belts. This helps to reduce head, neck and chest injuries by easing pressure and reducing movement in the event of an impact.

Major League Soccer Announces 2009 Best XI


MLS Commissioner Don Garber today announced the 2009 Best XI during his annual State of the League address. The Best XI recognizes the League’s top 11 players at each position on the field – one goalkeeper, three defenders, five midfielders and two forwards. Six members of the 2009 Best XI are prior recipients of the honor, while five have been named to the squad for the first time.

The Best XI members received the most votes from the media, MLS players and MLS coaches and general managers.
