Homestead: Jimmie Johnson NASCAR Sprint Cup Pole Press Conference

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE'S IMPALA SS – POLE WINNER

THIS IS YOUR FOURTH POLE IN 2009 AND YOUR SECOND POLE AT HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY AND YOUR 23RD POLE OVERALL. YOU MENTIONED YOU WANTED TO START UP FRONT AND YOU'VE CERTAINLY ACCOMPLISHED THAT.

"Yeah I'm definitely excited for the track position and having that first pit stall. One thing that a lot of you (media) might know is how difficult pit road is here when the sun is setting to find your pit box and even see the parameters of your pit box. So there are a lot of reasons to qualify well and I'm very happy that we did. From practice to qualifying I was thinking long and hard about my lap. We didn't have the lap we were hoping for in practice. We got off to a slow start in practice but in practice on the last sticker run that we made, I just tried way too hard; and I'm glad that I did because I really pushed myself and the car and I found the limit of where traction was down in (Turns) 3 and 4. And with Mark's (Martin) great 3 and 4, it was really important for me to not give any time away down there. I'm proud of the focus I had. A lot of the laps I drove in my mind and went out there and put in a good one."

Homestead: Chevrolet NASCAR Sprint Cup Qualifying Recap

Jimmie Johnson started the final weekend of the season and his quest for a fourth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) off right by putting his No. 48 Lowe's Impala SS on the pole for the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway (HMS).

It is Johnson's fourth pole of the year; his second at HMS and the 23rd of his career.

Six Team Chevy drivers scored top-10 starting positions in the 43-car field for Sunday's race.

Homestead: Mark Martin NASCAR Sprint Cup Qualifying Quotes - P4

MARK MARTIN, NO. 5 KELLOGG'S/CARQUEST IMPALA SS, QUALIFIED 4TH:

DESCRIBE THE LAP

"It is a good race car, but it wasn't a good lap. But, I am really happy that we ran as fast as we did. Early wasn't a good time to go. But that doesn't matter because when we went, we laid down a better lap than we probably thought. We picked up considerably from practice and most guys aren't doing that. Kudos to this race team. This is a great race car. We dug in and I really thought we were going to take a beating in qualifying and it isn't going to be that paid. It wasn't too scary out there but it was a regular qualifying deal. My car was more comfortable than those that make me shake."

Homestead: Jimmie Johnson NASCAR Sprint Cup Qualifying Quotes - Pole!

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE'S IMPALA SS, POLE SITTER: DESCRIBE YOUR EFFORT: "It was really good. Definitely proud of the work today. We didn't start off very good. I know we didn't show well in practice. I made a mistake on the lap I needed to post a good lap and felt like I was going to be competitive. The number Mark (Martin) put up, I didn't know if it was going to reachable. We just needed a good lap, a good clean lap and we got it. I am real proud of this Lowe's team."

Homestead: Tony Stewart NASCAR Sprint Cup Qualifying Quotes - P5

TONY STEWART, NO. 14 OFFICE DEPOT/OLD SPICE IMPALA SS, QUALIFIED 5TH: HOW DO YOU CHOOSE WHETHER TO RUN THE TOP OR THE BOTTOM? "It is just personal preference right now. What feels good you as a driver and where your car feels good. I felt better on the top but I know Mark (Martin) has been committed to the bottom all day. That is the good thing about this track. Normally, no matter where we go, there is one distinct groove, a good spot on the race track to be for qualifying. That is what is cool about being here at Homestead, there were polar opposite grooves to run in."

KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 29 SHELL-PENNZOIL IMPALA SS, QUALIFIED 6TH: TALK ABOUT THIS RACE TRACK, YOU ALWAYS RUN WELL HERE. "For whatever reason for RCR and our Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet, it has been a good race track for us. It just fits everything that we do. It is a lot of fun because you can race from the bottom to the top. Our car has been good all day today."

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 39 U.S. ARMY ALL-AMERICAN BOWL IMPALA SS, QUALIFIED 7TH

MARK MARTIN SAID GETTING OFF TURN FOUR IS A LITTLE TRICKY, HOW WAS IT FOR YOU?

"I saw Mark's (Martin) interview and he was mad. He was mad at himself during practice or I guess after practice and that probably led a little bit to his getting off turn four so good. It was a great run for our U.S. Army Chevrolet. I got loose down in three and four and lost some time down there. A good run for us and gave us a good starting spot which we haven't had the last few weeks.

Homestead: Dodge NASCAR Sprint Cup Qualifying Quotes

KURT BUSCH (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger) Qualified 12th

"It was a decent lap. The car was sliding around a little too much. We were the fastest in practice so we couldn’t adjust the car that much. We wanted to leave it along and it slid around a little bit too much. We’re 40 points behind Jeff Gordon. If we have a good run and he doesn’t have the best of days, we could gain 40 points on him and bump us up to third in points. Qualifying is important at all places, but some more so than others. Here, with the multiple grooves, qualifying is not the most important thing. It helps to get a good pit box selection so you’re not fighting the track-position game from the get-go. One thing that is fun about this race is it starts in the day and goes into night."

Homestead Q&A: NASCAR Sprint Cup - Kurt Busch

KURT BUSCH (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger)

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR SEASON? "It’s been a long season, but yet it’s been a successful season for us at Penske Racing. A real good, consistent effort week-in-and-week-out. To have 20 top-10 finishes, that shows that we have that type of consistency to run up front and be contenders for the championship. We were eliminated last week due to the Jimmie Johnson-era that we all live in. To have Mark Martin run second in the championship standings after he’s finished second in the standings four times before….we hope to have a good battle this weekend. We hope that we get to see something exciting happen. Either way, no matter who wins, Hendrick Motorsports…as soon as I see Rick (Hendrick), I’m going to shake his hand and congratulate him. He’s done an outstanding job this season as well as all the years past. To have three guys 1-2-3 in the championship, that’s impressive. It’s a good group of guys…drivers, crew chiefs, engine builders, the engineering support system over there…it’s very strong. For us at Penske, we put up a valiant fight. We won a couple races this season. Homestead is a good track for us. We should be OK this weekend and maybe we can jump into this Hendrick trifecta. We’re only 40 points behind Jeff Gordon, so obviously that’s a goal this weekend to see if we can get 40 points on Jeff which translates to about 10 positions on track. So if we go out there and finish top-five, he needs to finish 10th to 15th. We may have a shot at it. Overall, a great season; I’m very proud of it. We have nothing to hang our heads about at the 2 camp. We’re gonna look for a glimmer of light this weekend and by doing that, we can try and finish third in points."

Homestead Q&A: NASCAR Sprint Cup - Greg Biffle

GREG BIFFLE – No. 16 3M Ford Fusion

"This is definitely a good race track for us. I enjoy this race track. I enjoy racing here. It seems like the track is starting to, obviously, year after year a track starts to lose a little bit of grip and the groove moves around. With our cars, the groove is up top right away. I’m surprised to see that. This is the first time in a long time that any track than Darlington we run at the top of the race track. It’s going to be interesting to see what it’ll take to make passes here and all of that with the groove being up against the fence. We’ll see what Sunday brings for us. Hopefully, we’ll get our car running good up at the top and we’ll be good on Sunday."

Homestead Q&A: NASCAR Sprint Cup - Carl Edwards

Carl Edwards, driver of the No. 99 Aflac Ford Fusion, came into the Homestead-Miami Speedway infield media center for a press conference to discuss the 2009 season and other topics.

CARL EDWARDS – No. 99 Aflac Ford Fusion

"This is it. This is our last shot to get a win this season, so we couldn’t come to a better race track. Roush Fenway does really well here. Our Fords run well. Last year was a good race in the Nationwide Series and the Cup Series. Hopefully, we can have a good run. I want to be in that top 10 really badly, so we’ve got to make up 44 points on Kasey. I had a dream last night that it all worked out, but then I woke up this morning and realized we still have to go do it. Hopefully, that’s the case and we can get in that top 10, but we’ve been running well on the mile-and-a-halfs, so I’m pretty excited about being here for the final race."

DAVID RAGAN – No. 6 UPS Ford Fusion (Qualified 42nd)

"I think the track lost a little grip. Speed-wise, I don’t think we’ve got a lot of speed in qualifying trim and going out second is not gonna help our cause any. But I was happy with our UPS Ford when we unloaded in race trim. I think we were a little faster in race trim than we were in qualifying trim, so it just doesn’t have a lot of speed. Hopefully, it’ll drive good tomorrow and we’ll see what kind of a race car it is for Sunday."

Homestead Q&A: NASCAR Sprint Cup - Chip Ganassi, Jamie McMurry

CHIP GANASSI, TEAM OWNER; JAMIE MCMURRY, DRIVER AND KEVIN "BONO" MANION, NO. 1 BASS PRO SHOPS/TRACKER BOATS IMPALA SS, met with members of the media at Homestead-Miami Speedway and discussed the announcement of Jamie as driver for 2010, the goal of the team for 2010 and other topics:

TELL US ABOUT THE RECENT ANNOUNCEMENT THAT JAMIE MCMURRAY WAS RETURNING TO EARNHARDT-GANASSI RACING TO DRIVE THE NO. 1 BASS PRO SHOPS CHEVROLET.

CHIP GANASSI: "You know I think as everybody in the room probably knows, we have first-hand knowledge of Jamie McMurray and the job he can do. I think it’s interesting to me, the one thing that sticks in my mind is the three years he was with us that first year obviously having the win there down in Charlotte which was huge but really the second and third years everybody forgets that when we got to Richmond those years and the first years of the Chase we were 11th and they only took 10 guys in the Chase and we were 11th. I think the second year we were 12th and that’s when they were only taking 10 guys in the Chase. I know I forgot that. It seemed at the time like that wasn’t that big of a deal to do and we’ve all found out since that it is a big deal to do. So I’m really happy to have Jamie back. I think in the days of 2004 whenever he told me he was going to be leaving that was a different time in NASCAR then. I remember telling him that day he was making the right decision, when he left us. Those were the days when it looked like he needed a big, four cars team. I hope our team has shown this year maybe you don’t need to have all that to do well. Anyway that’s the drum that I’m going to beat for a while but I think it’s got some merit to it. You can be a good team and maybe not need six cars on your team or whatever.
