Formula Renault 2.0: Magny-Cours Presentation - Jean-Eric Vergne To Fight Back!

The Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup was turned upside down in the streets of Pau, as Albert Costa (Epsilon Euskadi), who dominated in the town of King Henri IV, has taken the lead in the overall classification. Jean-Eric Vergne must fight back on home turf. The Frenchman was the big loser in Pau as he also handed the lead in the FFSA Formula Renault 2.0 French Championship to Nathanaël Berthon (Epsilon Euskadi).

Jean-Eric Vergne made a great start to the season with three wins in four races. But things can change very quickly in the Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup. An off on free practice followed by electrical problems in qualifying and in race 1 dashed the hopes of the reigning French FFSA Formula Renault 2.0 French Champion. Vergne scored only one point in Pau, while his main rival, Albert Costa, bagged no fewer than thirty-four thanks to a clean sweep with two poles, two victories and two fastest laps.

Vergne arrives in Magny-Cours with the firm intention of fighting back on a circuit he knows like the back of his hand. Last season, though, Costa was very much at home in the Nièvre qualifying twice on the front row and scoring two second places. Battle has been well and truly joined between the two drivers.

Vergne and Costa will have to watch out as their rivals are determined not to let them have things all their own way. Carlos Munoz (Epsilon Euskadi) made a big step forward in the streets of Pau. His first two podiums in the Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup have got the monkey off his back! The Spaniard’s next objective is to score his first victory in the championship.

Epsilon Euskadi’s Nathanaël Berthon’s talent is also blossoming this season. His win in Barcelona in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 made people sit up and take notice. He finished fifth twice in the FR WEC in Barcelona, and did even better in Pau with a couple of third places. The Frenchman is now leading the FFSA Formula Renault 2.0 French Championship.

Julien Abelli (SG Drivers Project) has been the revelation of the early part of the season. He was on the podium at Nogaro, won in Barcelona and was very quick in Pau, so he will be one of the victory contenders at Magny-Cours. He is now lying third overall ten points behind Albert Costa and the SG Project driver’s ambitions have moved up several notches. But before aiming higher, he will have to fend off Miki Monras (SG Formula).

The Epsilon Sport teams with Luciano Bacheta and Arno Santamato and Pole Services with Benjamin Lariche also have a good chance. Like all the drivers of French nationality, they will be battling for the FFSA Formula Renault 2.0 French Championship. Last but not least, Spanish champion Marcelo Conchado (Amiter Galuppo Sport), who raced in Barcelona, will be back to try his luck in the Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup at Magny-Cours.

Overall classification: 1. Costa 63 pts – 2. Vergne 60 pts – 3. Abelli 53 pts – 4. Monras 52 pts – 5. Berthon 41 pts – 6. Pic 32 pts – 7. Munoz 28 pts – 8. Azzam 22 pts – 9. Breysse 14 pts – 10. Larcihe 12 pts
