V8 Supercar: Long Afternoon For Davison In Wa
Balance issues, causing lack of grip, has seen IRWIN Racing’s Alex Davison finish the Sunday race 21st at the BigPond 300 in Perth.
A decent qualifying performance of 17th had Davison confident of strong showing in today’s 200km race, especially as he was still yet to use the softer Dunlop sprint tyre.
Starting on the standard control tyre, Davison climbed to as high as seventh during what appeared to be a fortuitous safety car period.

With the IRWIN Racing team yet to run their soft tyres, a decision was made to keep Davison on the circuit to take advantage of track position. However, upon the re-start on lap #45 of 82, Davison struggled to stay inside the top-10, and just five laps later he pitted from 17th position.
With the soft tyres now on the IRWIN Falcon, he started another charge. However, he was boxed-in behind leader Craig Lowndes and off the lead lap. Then the IRWIN Racing Ford started to use-up its tyres, and Davison was forced to drop his pace and conserve the rubber through to the end.
WHAT ALEX DAVISON HAD TO SAY:
"We improved the IRWIN Ford for qualifying this morning and I thought we had a pretty good package. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find that extra bit of improvement for the race. When we had fresh tyres on the IRWIN Falcon we were competitive, but the tyres were just not hanging-in there over the longer runs. Due to the fuel strategy we had to run long stints on the tyres. The safety car fell too early for us to really make the best use of the soft tyres. Once they lost their shine the IRWIN Ford picked up a lot of over-steer and I really couldn’t fight at the end".
