Audi well prepared for Nurburgring 24 Hours

The teams of Audi Sport customer racing are entering the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring thoroughly prepared. In the final Top-30 qualifying, the two best Audi R8 LMS cars clinched grid positions in the top ten while all six teams completed their programs for preparation.

The Eifel showed its whimsical side on Friday. A thunderstorm in the afternoon gave the teams a foretaste of a weekend with a changeable weather forecast. The track that was still partially wet in the final qualifying session made for tricky conditions. The best driver from Audi Sport customer racing was Frank Stippler. In his home round, the 41-year-old pro from Bad Münstereifel achieved the fifth-best time in the Audi R8 LMS for Phoenix Racing. The Dutchman Robin Frijns clinched grid position ten for Belgian Audi Club Team WRT, trailed by René Rast (Audi Sport Team Phoenix) in position 16, Pierre Kaffer (Audi Sport Team WRT) in 22nd place following a puncture, and Marc Basseng (montaplast by Land-Motorsport) in position 25. Christian Mamerow (Twin Busch Motorsport), after an accident, only took 30th place.

After two tire punctures, the sister car of Timo Bernhard (Germany), Brendon Hartley (New Zealand) and Mark Webber (Australia) spent more than one-and-a-half hours of the six-hour race in the garage for repairs. Ford GT Makes History, Shank Team Returns to Victory Lane at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

Steven Cole Smith, IMSA Wire Service

MONTEREY, Calif. - Ford broke through with a first-time win for the Ford GT at the Continental Monterey Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Sunday, but Ford wasn’t the car and the manufacturer most were expecting to own the day.

Practice and qualifying strongly suggested Mazda would finally break through with its first series win in Prototype, but that didn’t happen - it was a savvy drive by Ozz Negri and gentleman driver John Pew in the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Honda-powered Ligier JS P2 that made it to the checkered flag a whopping 30.099 seconds over the second-place car, the No. 90 Visit Florida Chevrolet Daytona Prototype of Ryan Dalziel and Marc Goossens, in the car that won last year’s race in Monterey.

Third was Eric Curran in the No. 31 Whelen Action Express Corvette DP he shares with Dane Cameron. Curran was just 0.855 seconds behind the No. 90.

It was the first win for the No. 60 team since the 2012 Rolex 24 At Daytona. "It’s been a long time," Pew said. "I feel like a curse has been lifted."

Mazda Prototypes Sweep Front Row For Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix At Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

Continuing a weekend of firsts for Mazda Motorsports in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition, Tristan Nunez edged teammate Tom Long to capture the TOTAL Pole Award in qualifying for Sunday’s Continental Tire Monterey Sports Car Grand Prix powered by Mazda at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Fast from the green flag in Friday’s opening session, the team placed 1-2 in all three practices prior to sweeping the front row in qualifying. Prior to this weekend, the team had led one WeatherTech Championship practice session, in the most recent event at Long Beach.

Long momentarily eclipsed his teammate to take top honors with three minutes remaining in the back-and-forth, 15-minute qualifying session. But only seconds later, Nunez turned a track-record lap of 1:18.143 (103.103 mph) to lock up his first TOTAL Pole Award in the No. 55 Castrol/ModSpace Mazda co-driven by Monterey resident Jonathan Bomarito.
