Curtain Call For Daytona Prototypes Sees Tight Battle For Title In Season-Ending Petit Le Mans

The 2016 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season finale will see the final appearance of the current-generation Daytona Prototype sports car, with a trio of Corvette Daytona Prototypes battling for the Prototype class title in Saturday’s 10-hour Petit Le Mans presented by Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort at Road Atlanta (FOX Sports GO, FS1, Live, 11 a.m. ET).

Action Express Racing has a pair of Corvette DPs separated by only one point, 285-284, entering Round 11 of the 2016 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, with Wayne Taylor Racing seven points behind the leader with 278 points.

Dane Cameron and Eric Curran took over the championship lead with a second-place finish at the most recent race at Austin’s Circuit of The Americas in Action Express Racing’s No. 31 Whelen Engineering Corvette DP. They lead teammates and defending two-time Prototype champions Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi, drivers of the No. 5 Mustang Sampling Corvette DP. Recently crowned IndyCar champion Simon Pagenaud will co-drive the No. 31 Corvette DP at the finale, while Filipe Albuquerque will join the No. 5 team.

Corvette Daytona Prototype Carries Taylor Brothers To Lone Star Le Mans Victory, Championship Battle Tightens

Jordan Taylor held off a charging Dane Cameron to win Saturday’s Lone Star Le Mans at Circuit of The Americas. It was the third IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship victory of the season for the No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette Daytona Prototype started by Ricky Taylor, enabling the brothers to close to within seven points in the Prototype class battle with only one race remaining.

Cameron ran down Taylor and pulled alongside him with 13 minutes remaining, but Taylor held on to the lead, beating Cameron to the checkered flag by 1.421 seconds. That ended a two-race winning streak for the No. 31 Action Express Racing Whelen Engineering Corvette DP.

"During the strategy meeting coming into this race, we talked about going for the win or going for the points," said Ricky Taylor, who started from the pole. "Today was all about the win. I think the team did a great job. The stops were all great and the strategy was perfect. I feel like we had a great car the last 3 times we were here, and it’s great to finally get a win."

Both Audi cars on front row at Austin WEC Austin 2016

For the fourth time this year and for the third time in succession Audi has achieved the best starting base: the two Audi R18 cars locked out the front row of the grid for round six of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

As previously at Silverstone and the Nürburgring, car number 7 was unbeatable in qualifying. Marcel Fässler/André Lotterer/Benoît Tréluyer (CH/D/F) will be starting the race at Austin (Texas) on Saturday from pole position. "The car felt great," said Lotterer, who set the fastest single time of 1m 45.703s. "This is fantastic for the whole squad that has been working hard lately." Marcel Fässler completed the result - number 7 posted the best time of all entrants at 1m 45.842s. "Our Audi simply felt perfect in all turns. That was huge fun," said the Swiss.

Corvette Daytona Prototype Wins Third Pole Of 2016, Taylor Leads Qualifying For Lone Star Le Mans By Slim Margin

By less than a blink of an eye, Ricky Taylor captured his first TOTAL Pole Award of the season, leading IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship qualifying for Saturday’s Lone Star Le Mans at Circuit of The Americas (live, FS2, 12:30 p.m. ET).

Taylor ran a lap of 1:58.712 (103.1 mph) in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette Daytona Prototype co-driven by his brother Jordan. He beat out Tristan Nunez by a scant 0.003 seconds in a session that saw the top five Prototypes separated by just 0.709 seconds.

"It was very hot and slippery, and the track changes in the heat," said Taylor of his qualifying run in 90-plus degree heat. "It hasn’t been like this all weekend, so it was all about adapting to the track. This was as close as we’re going to get to conditions for tomorrow’s race, so hopefully this is a good read on how it’s going to stack up. It’s going to be a tough race."

Ford GT Takes Lone Star Le Mans GTLM Pole, First In WeatherTech Championship For Briscoe

As difficult as it may be to believe, given his record of success, it wasn’t until Friday’s qualifying session for Saturday’s two-hour, 40-minute Lone Star Le Mans that Ryan Briscoe earned his first career pole position in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition.

The Aussie checked that accomplishment off the list courtesy of a best qualifying lap of 2 minutes, 4.188 seconds (98.5 mph) in the No. 67 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT in the 15-minute GT Le Mans (GTLM) class qualifying session.

While it was Briscoe’s first, it was the third for the No. 67 team, as teammate Richard Westbrook took poles at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in May and the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen in July. And it was the fourth pole of the year for the new Ford GT program, as Dirk Mueller put the team’s No. 66 entry on pole at Road America last month.

Every WeatherTech Championship GT Daytona Full-Time Manufacturer Has Visited Victory Lane In 2016

When the No. 48 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 fielded by Paul Miller Racing took the checkered flag in last Sunday’s Michelin GT Challenge at VIRginia International Raceway, it represented the sixth different manufacturer to win a race in the highly competitive IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT Daytona (GTD) class. In fact, all manufacturers competing full-time in the GTD class now have won at least one race.

Co-drivers Bryan Sellers and Madison Snow brought Lamborghini its first victory in WeatherTech Championship competition, in the Italian manufacturer’s first year in the class. In the process, Lamborghini joined an illustrious list of manufacturers to celebrate GTD victories this season:

One year ago, Porsche North America seemed poised to claim its third consecutive 1-2 finish in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition at the Lone Star Le Mans at Austin’s Circuit of The Americas.

But with three minutes remaining, both cars were forced to pit for fuel, allowing BMW Team RLL drivers Dirk Werner and Bill Auberlen to win over the Risi Competizione Ferrari of Giancarlo Fisichella and Pierre Kaffer. Nick Tandy and eventual GT Le Mans (GTLM) champion Patrick Pilet managed to claim the final spot on the podium in the No. 911 Porsche 911 RSR.

Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia kept the No. 3 Corvette Racing Corvette C7.R up front throughout most of Sunday’s Michelin GT Challenge at VIRginia International Raceway, and then prevailed in a one-lap sprint to the checkered flag to win their first IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race of the season.

After watching their team cars combine to win seven of eight races in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) this season the No. 3 Corvette and Ford Chip Ganassi Racing’s No. 66 Ford GT co-driven by Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller battled up front throughout the lone WeatherTech Championship race of the season reserved for the GTLM and GT Daytona classes.

Corvette, Lamborghini Pace WeatherTech Championship Practice For Michelin GT Challenge At VIR

Corvette Racing took bragging rights in 95-degree heat during the opening day of IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship practice Friday at VIRginia International Raceway, leading practice for Sunday’s Michelin GT Challenge (live, FS1, 1:30 p.m. ET).

Antonio Garcia led the GT Le Mans (GTLM) competitors, turning a lap of 1:42.623 (114.7 mph) on the recently repaved 17-turn, 3.27-mile circuit in the No. 3 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C7.R co-driven by Jan Magnussen. Second, 0.077 seconds back, was Joey Hand in the No. 66 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT at 1:42.700 (114.6 mph), with the nine GTLM competitors separated by a mere 0.816 seconds.

"All the work we’ve done between Road America and now definitely has helped," Garcia said. "All the testing we have done has improved things. The new surface here at VIR is very nice. We are already going faster here than we ever have. It’s a nice improvement from last year, even though it is super-hot today. In normal conditions, I would think it would be mega. But for today, I’m very happy with the track and our Corvette."

Three-time 2016 winner Ryan Briscoe was third with a lap of 1:42.779 (114.5 mph) in the No. 67 Ford GT, followed by 2014 VIR winner Giancarlo Fisichella in the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTE at 143.117 (114.1 mph). The points-leading No. 4 Corvette C7.R of Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin was sixth with a best lap of 1:48.181 (114.0 mph).

Corvette Racing Takes Two-Race Winning Streak, Points Lead To Michelin GT Challenge At VIR

Corvette Racing takes a two-race winning streak and the points lead in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class into Sunday’s Michelin GT Challenge at VIRginia International Raceway, Round 10 of the 2016 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (live, FS1, 1:30 p.m. ET).

Virginia’s Tommy Milner looks to continue momentum from Road America, where he charged from fifth to first in the closing five minutes of the race to give the No. 4 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C7.R co-driven by Oliver Gavin its fourth victory of the season.

"I have lot of great racing memories at VIR, and it would be great to add another with our fifth win of the season in the No. 4 Chevrolet Corvette," said Milner, a native of Leesburg who now resides in Ashburn. "This is a track that is really fun to drive. It’s incredibly fast, it’s flowing and has a couple of really good elevation changes. A GT-only race is a nice dynamic for us, where we have a chance for an overall win. The most important thing we can do, though, is score as many points as possible."

A trip to VIRginia International Raceway for the Michelin GT Challenge on Sunday, August 28 is just what the doctor ordered for Risi Competizione.

Two years ago, Fisichella scored a thrilling last-lap victory, passing the Porsche of Bryan Sellers in the final turn to win in the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 458 Italia started from the pole by Pierre Kaffer. It was the team’s second-consecutive victory at VIR, with Olivier Beretta and Matteo Malucelli winning an ALMS race at the circuit in 2013.
