Nissan Scores Breakthrough DPi Win with Derani, van Overbeek and Patron ESM at Road America

Staff Report, IMSA Wire Service

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – The Nissan DPi is a winner in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition.

In Sunday’s two-hour, 40-minute Continental Tire Road Race Showcase at Road America, Brazilian driver Pipo Derani and teammate Johannes van Overbeek broke a seven-race win streak for Cadillac, co-driving their No. 22 Tequila Patrón Nissan to victory. Derani took the lead when Stephen Simpson pitted the No. 85 JDC-Miller Motorsports ORECA LM P2 car with 25 minutes remaining and held off Jordan Taylor in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R to by win by 2.356 seconds.

However, with Simpson and the JDC-Miller team on a different fuel strategy than the rest of the Prototype class, Derani’s winning move actually came on a restart with just under 40 minutes remaining. At that time, Derani got a good run heading into Turn 1 and overpowered Jordan Taylor in the No. 10 machine to take over second place.

Weather-Shortened Continental Tire Challenge Race Hands Win to KohR Motorsport

Staff Report, IMSA Wire Service

With 40 minutes remaining in Saturday’s Road America 120, the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge field was brought on to pit lane and the red flag displayed due to lightning in the area. While the conditions eventually improved, there was not enough time to complete full-course caution procedures and restart the race, so the checkered flag was displayed.

As a result, KohR Motorsports took home its third Grand Sport (GS) class win of the season in the No. 59 Ford Mustang driven by Dean Martin and Jack Roush, Jr.

“There is no real preparing for it,” said Roush about facing uncertain weather conditions. “You just have to go out there and take risks and make the best decisions you can in each moment and that’s all you can do.”

“Those rainy conditions, they’re never the same so you’ve just got to take what the weather brings you and hope for the best,” Martin added. “We’ve struggled a little bit because it’s a new car, it’s the first car that was built. We’ve had a few gremlins, but the teams worked really well to work everything out.

“The guys at Ford and the guys at Multimatic have been extremely helpful with that, very supportive and we think we’ve got everything sorted now. We would’ve liked to run the whole race and get another race distance done, but the team’s done great and we have a lot of support from Ford and Roush and Multimatic, so it’s been a good year.”

Mueller Leads Ford GT Sweep Of Front Row At Road America

Staff Report, IMSA Wire Service

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – Dirk Mueller was in a league of his own in qualifying Saturday at Road America, leading a Ford GT sweep of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT Le Mans (GTLM) class front row for Sunday’s Continental Tire Road Race Showcase.

Mueller lapped the scenic 4.048-mile circuit in two minutes, 1.422 seconds (120.017 mph) in the No. 66 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT, an impressive 0.781 seconds ahead of teammate Ryan Briscoe, 2:02.203, in Ford Chip Ganassi Racing’s No. 67 entry.

It was Mueller’s 20th career IMSA pole, second in a row at Road America and a new class track record.

“I’d been on pole here last year and we had some opening tough luck when something broke on the first lap and we had to fix it on pit lane,” said Mueller. “That’s a bit of unfinished business so we were really looking forward to this one.”

Staff Report, IMSA Wire Service

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – Ricky Taylor blistered the previous IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Prototype class track record and beat his next closest competitor by more than a second en route to his fourth TOTAL Pole Award of the season in qualifying for Sunday’s Continental Tire Road Race Showcase at Road America.

Two days after his 28th birthday, Taylor posted a best lap of 1 minute, 53.058 seconds (128.896 mph) in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R he shares with his younger brother, Jordan Taylor, to secure the top starting spot in the 35-car field. The brothers go in search of their sixth victory of the season in Sunday’s race, but their first win since winning Round 5 on the season at the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic in Detroit in early June.

“The car was beautiful today,” said Ricky Taylor. “The team just really executed and gave me a really good qualifying car.”

IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Brings Action-Packed Competition To 12 Storied Road Racing Venues In Highly Anticipated 2018 Season

Twelve world-class road racing facilities and events highlight the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship schedule unveiled today as part of the now annual “State of the Sport” presentation at Road America, site of this weekend’s Continental Tire Road Race Showcase.

In 2018, the WeatherTech Championship will feature three classes of competition. The Prototype (P) class includes Daytona Prototype international (DPi) and LM P2 race cars battling head-to-head for class and overall race honors, the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class features factory-backed GT race cars in what is widely considered the best GT racing in the world, and the GT Daytona (GTD) class includes GT3 race cars from world-renowned manufacturers prepared by top professional race teams with highly competitive Pro-Am driver lineups.

“The 2018 WeatherTech Championship schedule again showcases the stability of our platform, while at the same time reaffirming our commitment to the best road racing venues and events in North America. And this time offering a few surprises for our fans,” said IMSA President Scott Atherton. “Each race on our 2018 calendar has a rich history of sports car competition, which we expect to be at an all-time high next season across all three classes.

IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Features Three Classes, 10 Races In 2018

The IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge enters an exciting new phase in 2018, with the complete adoption of GT4 technical regulations for the headlining Grand Sport (GS) class and the introduction of the new TCR (Touring Car) class alongside the continuation of the ultra-competitive Street Tuner (ST) class.

All three classes will compete in a 10-race Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge schedule that once again takes the series to iconic road racing venues across North America as companion events to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. As has been the case for the past several years, the Continental Tire Challenge typically will provide the featured race on the day before each event weekend’s WeatherTech Championship event.

“The Continental Tire Challenge took an encouraging step forward in 2017 with the introduction of GT4 technical regulations for the GS class,” said IMSA President Scott Atherton. “In 2018, we will move to full GT4 specs for GS and will see the introduction of several impressive new race cars from fantastic manufacturers.

RS1 Throws Hat in Continental Tire Challenge GS Title Ring with Machavern, Murcott

Staff Report, IMSA Wire Service

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A pair of 20-somethings are eagerly taking the Grand Sport (GS) class by storm this year in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge.

Dillon Machavern and Dylan Murcott, piloting the No. 28 RS1 Porsche Cayman GT4 MR, have been a major component to RS1’s successful first season in GS competition. However, this isn’t the first time the duo has been paired together in sports car racing.

“In 2014, we raced a (BMW) 128i in [Street Tuner] with Mitchum Motorsports and that’s where we were introduced,” Machavern explained. “I knew him a little bit from SCCA Miata racing, like we had crossed paths before, but I hadn’t really known him that well until we were at Mitchum and co-drivers there. We worked really well together so when this opportunity came up, we were all in for it because we’re very similar with how we like the car and stuff like that.”

It was Murcott who reached out to Machavern about the opportunity to co-drive at RS1 and, according to Machavern, it was RS1’s championship-winning resume that drew him in. The team’s success so far this season has already drawn in another sponsor as well, YouRulz, which added its name to the car at Watkins Glen.

All Eyes on GTLM Title Race as WeatherTech Championship Heads to Road America

Staff Report, IMSA Wire Service

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Although it took the remainder of the season to play all the way out, the 2016 Continental Tire Road Race Showcase at Road America proved to be a turning point in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT Le Mans (GTLM) battle for the championship.

The No. 4 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C7.R duo of Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin opened the year strong with victories in both the Rolex 24 At Daytona and Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, and headed to Road America riding the momentum of earning the 100th victory in the team’s storied history two weeks earlier at Lime Rock Park.

As the laps wound down at Road America, however, it appeared fifth place might be the best the No. 4 team could achieve that day. Meanwhile, the No. 67 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT pairing of Richard Westbrook and Ryan Briscoe were leading the race – Westbrook having taken the lead from Jan Magnussen in the No. 3 Corvette at the two-hour mark.

Points Tighten In Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup With One Race Remaining

As the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship gears up for this weekend’s Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, a number of teams are still basking in impressive runs at last weekend’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen at Watkins Glen International, the third round of the Tequila Patrón North American Endurance Cup.

One of those teams is the race-winning No. 5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi-V.R and drivers Christian Fittipaldi, Joao Barbosa and Filipe Albuquerque. The trio gave the team its first win of the season at Watkins Glen, but with impressive consistency throughout the three endurance races – including running in the first or second position in eight of the nine segments to date – the team has moved into Patrón Endurance Cup points lead.

The Patrón Endurance Cup rewards top performers in the four WeatherTech Championship endurance races: the Rolex 24 At Daytona, the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen and the 10-hour Motul Petit Le Mans on Saturday Oct. 7. Points are awarded at strategic intervals for each race, with five points going to each class leader at those intervals, followed by four points for second place, three for third, and two points for all others from fourth place onward.

Martin Harvey Race Report from Watkins Glen

Drivers of the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup finally ran a full race this weekend, with the presentation of Round 6 on Saturday at the 5.47-kilometre, 11 turns Watkins Glen road course in Watkins Glen, New York. Two races were on tap for the friendly GT3 face off between Canadian and American series drivers, a match-up that is not always amicable. Starting in the rain in a single file behind the safety car, Martin Harvey of Repentigny, Quebec moved up four spots in the first three laps of the scheduled 45-minute race (20 laps), but then cautiously slowed down following the second full course yellow when the track began to dry up.

Defending Prototype Challenge Masters Champion Janco Continues to Improve While Racing on Two Continents

When Joel Janco won the Masters Championship in the Mazda Prototype Lites series last year, he achieved his goal. But then he got started on a new goal - racing in two different series on two different continents.

"I knew I wasn't going to win the series overall, but my goal was to beat the other 'old guys,'" Janco joked. "Unfortunately, IMSA categorizes old guys as over 40 and I'm 68 - that's a big gap."

Janco started racing around 25 years ago in a different sports car series and quickly worked his way up in the past five years.

Acura Wins First WeatherTech Championship Race with Legge, Lally in Detroit

Staff Report, IMSA Wire Service

DETROIT – Masterful pit strategy from the Michael Shank Racing with Curb-Agajanian crew and flawless driving by co-drivers Andy Lally and Katherine Legge delivered a history-making first global victory for the new Acura NSX GT3 in the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic at Belle Isle Park.

It was the strongest weekend to date for the first-year IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship program, as Legge qualified the No. 93 Acura second Friday afternoon and ran comfortably in second place throughout her driving stint before pitting under caution just past the 30-minute mark in the race. With track position at a premium, team owner Mike Shank decided to change only two tires during the pit stop, which vaulted Lally into the lead.

That pit stop made all the difference. Lally managed to keep the No. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 GT3 of Alessandro Balzan in his mirrors for the remainder of the race and went on to win by 2.441 seconds.
