Defending Prototype Challenge Masters Champion Janco Continues to Improve While Racing on Two Continents

When Joel Janco won the Masters Championship in the Mazda Prototype Lites series last year, he achieved his goal. But then he got started on a new goal - racing in two different series on two different continents.

"I knew I wasn't going to win the series overall, but my goal was to beat the other 'old guys,'" Janco joked. "Unfortunately, IMSA categorizes old guys as over 40 and I'm 68 - that's a big gap."

Janco started racing around 25 years ago in a different sports car series and quickly worked his way up in the past five years.

Acura Wins First WeatherTech Championship Race with Legge, Lally in Detroit

Staff Report, IMSA Wire Service

DETROIT – Masterful pit strategy from the Michael Shank Racing with Curb-Agajanian crew and flawless driving by co-drivers Andy Lally and Katherine Legge delivered a history-making first global victory for the new Acura NSX GT3 in the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic at Belle Isle Park.

It was the strongest weekend to date for the first-year IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship program, as Legge qualified the No. 93 Acura second Friday afternoon and ran comfortably in second place throughout her driving stint before pitting under caution just past the 30-minute mark in the race. With track position at a premium, team owner Mike Shank decided to change only two tires during the pit stop, which vaulted Lally into the lead.

That pit stop made all the difference. Lally managed to keep the No. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 GT3 of Alessandro Balzan in his mirrors for the remainder of the race and went on to win by 2.441 seconds.

Challenge Set For Ford Chip Ganassi Racing After Close Qualifying Puts Ford Gts P4-5

Just hundredths of seconds separated contenders in GTLM qualifying at Circuit of the Americas, where Ford Chip Ganassi Racing qualified p4-5 for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship on Friday.

Drivers Ryan Briscoe and Dirk Müller qualified the No. 67 and 66 Ford GTs, respectively, after both cars chased the perfect set-up in practice.

"We made a few small changes before qualifying," Briscoe said. "We had a really good run. The car was just a little too loose, so I was happy with where we finished. I don’t think we’ve gotten everything we can out of these Ford GTs here at COTA quite yet."

2017 IMSA Prototype Challenge Presented by Mazda Prepares for Series Debut at Barber Motorsports Park

It's impossible to handicap the pair of IMSA Prototype Challenge Presented by Mazda races that will take place at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala. April 21-22. The series has never competed at Barber, but given how nimble and quick these cars are, and how the complex 2.38-mile road course rewards those two characteristics, this series and this track are made for each other.

There's another reason that the races will be a wild card at the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama - one of the two classes that make up the Prototype Challenge Presented by Mazda field is brand new for 2017, not only to the series, but to competition in the United States. The LM P3 class originated in Europe and is spreading around the world, and these races at Barber are only the second time the class has competed in North America.

Two-Way Three-peat: Taylor Brothers Win Third Consecutive WeatherTech Championship Race In 2017 And At Long Beach

Staff Report, IMSA Wire Service

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The closing driver in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi V.R may have been different, but on Saturday the result was more of the same as Jordan Taylor - after watching his older brother and co-driver Ricky drive to victory in the opening two races on the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship calendar - made it three wins in a row by winning the BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach.

This time it was Jordan Taylor who had the wheel on the final stint in the Cadillac DPi, and it was a move in Turn 1 with five minutes remaining that was the winning maneuver. Taylor got a run on race-leader Ryan Dalziel down the frontstretch and swung around the outside of Dalziel’s No. 2 Tequila Patrón Nissan DPi, utilizing GT lap traffic to pull ahead to a 6.349 second victory.

Milner, Gavin Score Last-Lap Victory for Corvette in BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach

Staff Report, IMSA Wire Service

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The iconic hairpin turn at the Long Beach street circuit played a central role in the fate of the No. 4 Corvette Racing team and co-drivers Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner two years in a row.

Last year, this was the turn where Milner was spun out of the lead late in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race by Porsche driver Frederic Makowiecki, enabling Makowiecki’s Porsche teammate, Nick Tandy, to sneak past for the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class victory. This year, the hairpin gave one back to the No. 4 teammates.
