The NISMO Athlete Global Team secured a hard-fought second-place finish at today’s Bathurst 12-Hour endurance race, held at Australia’s famous Mount Panorama circuit.

Team drivers Katsumasa Chiyo, Rick Kelly and Florian Strauss powered their Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 to the finish line a mere 1.276 seconds behind the winning Tekno Autosports McLaren 650S GT3 after 12 grueling hours of racing, which was more akin to a sprint than an endurance race.

Class victory for Audi in Australia 12h Bathurst 2016

The Australian privateer team GT Motorsport instantly won the amateur classification of the Bathurst 12 Hour on fielding the new Audi R8 LMS for the first time. Meanwhile, Phoenix Racing (Germany), like last year, was battling for a podium result, but Alex Davison/Laurens Vanthoor/Markus Winkelhock (AUS/B/D) remained without a real chance at Mount Panorama.

Three Australians celebrated class victory at their home round: Nathan Antunes and his two compatriots Barton Mawer and Greg Taylor won on the legendary Bathurst circuit with a large advantage. All three contested a race in the latest generation of the Audi R8 LMS car for the first time and saw the checkered flag with a three-lap advantage.

McLaren wins the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour and leads the Intercontinental GT Challenge

Shane Van Gisbergen, Alvaro Parente and Jonathon Webb drove their #59 Tekno Autosports McLaren to victory in an action-packed Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour, the opening round in the new Intercontinental GT Challenge. The McLaren drivers held on to a mere 1.2 second lead over the 2015-winning Nismo Nissan GT-R. Third went to the #10 M-Sport Bentley, with the #2 Phoenix Audi and the #36 Erebus Mercedes making it five different manufacturers in the top five. McLaren therefore take an early lead in the 2016 Intercontinental GT Challenge ahead of Bentley, with Audi third and Mercedes fourth. The Intercontinental GT Challenge AM win went to Steve McLaughlin in the #75 MPC Audi.

Eight different leaders from five different manufacturers, a record 29 lead changes, a new outright lap record for Shane Van Gisbergen (2'01.567) and a new distance record with 297 laps: the spectacular and closely-fought 2016 edition of the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour, the first round of the inaugural season of the Intercontinental GT Challenge, was definitely one for the history books. But after twelve hours of non-stop on-track action, it was Tekno Autosports, and their McLaren 650S who triumphed, after their pit-stop strategy put them in the lead when it counted most.

Fabulous pole for Van Gisbergen and McLaren

McLaren driver Shane Van Gisbergen rewrote the history books on Mount Panorama, by claiming the pole for the 2016 Bathurst 12 Hour in a record-breaking 2'01.286, at the wheel of his #59 Tekno Autosports McLaren. René Rast put the #75 MPC Audi alongside him on the front row.

The qualifying session for the 2016 Bathurst 12 Hour, the first round of the inaugural Intercontinental GT Challenge, was always going to be one for the record books. During the free practice sessions, the best GT drivers in the world had already shown that last year's pole time would probably be beaten, and it did not take long for this to happen.

In the first part of qualifying, Shane Van Gisbergen already became the first man to lap the Mount Panorama circuit in 2'01.591, almost a full second quicker than last year's pole time. In the knowledge that there would be a twenty-minute second session for the Class A cars afterwards, most other GT3 teams focused on getting the set-up right, so Van Gisbergen's time was safe for a while.
