IMSA News Roundup: July 28, 2016

Thereís a logjam atop the list of leading winners in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. While Dane Cameron entered the year atop the list of career victories with seven, he now has plenty of company at the top.

The Action Express driver scored his eighth career triumph in the most recent Prototype race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Corvette Daytona Prototype. That tied Cameron with Colin Braun and Jon Bennett, who took their second Prototype Challenge (PC) victory of the season at CTMP.

Now, thereís a fourth driver tied for the lead. Renger van der Zande joined Alex Popow in winning his third race of the year at Lime Rock Park for Starworks Motorsport, also giving him eight career victories. Van der Zande recorded the fastest PC lap for the fourth consecutive event at Lime Rock, a series record. He now has eight career fastest laps, tying him for the lead in that category with Cameron.

Additionally, Braun became the leading career TOTAL Pole Award winner in WeatherTech Championship competition at Lime Rock. The CORE autosport driver captured his third pole of the season at Lime Rock, giving him six career poles to break a tie with James Davison.

Van der Zande, Popow Shine For Starworks Motorsport At Lime Rock

Alex Popow and Renger van der Zande teamed up on a hot and busy day at Lime Rock Park to score their third IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship victory of the season in the IMSA WeatherTech Northeast Grand Prix.

Popow, driving the No. 8 Starworks Motorsport ORECA FLM09, started fifth and nearly sustained damage in an incident at the start, but was able to fight his way to the lead 33 minutes into the race after the first round of pit stops under caution. He led the next 30 laps before turning the car over to van der Zande, who took the lead with one hour, five minutes remaining, and led the rest of the way in the Prototype Challenge (PC) class.

"Iím very happy with the win, itís another advantage for the championship," said van der Zande, who joined Popow in winning for the third time in four races. "Lime Rock is a crazy place, because itís a small track and youíre always wrestling your way through the traffic. Itís a fair fight here, because you can easily lose position coming through traffic. I love coming to Lime Rock, and Iím very happy with my team."

Corvette Racing Wins 100th Race In 1-2 Sweep Led By Milner, Gavin At Lime Rock

LAKEVILLE, Conn. (July 23, 2016) - Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin gave Corvette Racing its 100th sports car racing victory and led the teamís 60th 1-2 sweep in Saturdayís IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park.

It was the third victory of the 2016 WeatherTech Championship season for the co-drivers of the No. 4 Chevrolet Corvette C7.R and the first since back-to-back GT Le Mans (GTLM) class victories in the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida. The victory enabled Milner and Gavin to extend their lead in the GTLM standings to 10 points, 228-218, over No. 67 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT co-drivers Ryan Briscoe and Richard Westbrook, who saw their three-race GTLM win streak come to an end with a third-place run.

The two-hour, 40-minute race was a hotly contested battle virtually throughout the GTLM class, with all five competing manufacturers running inside the top three at one point or another in the race. The battle came down to Ferrari vs. Chevrolet vs. Ford, as Giancarlo Fisichella led the way with an hour remaining in the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTE ahead of Gavin in the No. 4 Corvette and Briscoe in the No. 67 Ford.

With just over 30 minutes left in the race, Fisichella lost traction and ran off course exiting Lime Rockís famed "Big Bend" Turn 1-2 complex, opening the door for Gavin to move into the lead. Four laps later, Fisichella again ran wide exiting Turn 2 allowing Briscoe and Antonio Garcia in the No. 3 Corvette to move into second and third.

Ford Shelby GT350R-C Captures Second Straight At Lime Rock Park, Maxwell, Johnson Extend GS Lead With Third Victory Of Season

LAKEVILLE, Conn. (July 23, 2016) - Scott Maxwell and Billy Johnson took advantage of lightning-fast work in the pits by the Multimatic Motorsports pit crew to score their second consecutive victory at Lime Rock Park on Saturday in the No. 15 Ford Shelby GT350R-C, extending their lead in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Grand Sports (GS) class with their third triumph of the season.

The pair combined to lead four times for 88 of the 150 laps on the fast 1.53-mile seven-turn "classic" layout in the caution-free race.

"We won it in the pits today - our pit stops were superb," Maxwell said. "The car was really good - we were about a half-second off the pace - and Billy and I didnít make any mistakes. But we gained about five or six seconds on both of our pit stops, and that was enough to win the race."

Maxwell, Johnson Win Second Straight IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Race at Lime Rock Park

Steven Cole Smith, IMSA Wire Service

LAKEVILLE, Conn. - Earlier in the season, it looked like no one could beat the Porsche Cayman GT4 in the Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge GS class, and indeed the No. 33 CJ Wilson Racing Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport of Danny Burkett and Marc Miller qualified on the pole for todayís Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut.

But when the checkered flag fell, it was the No. 15 Multimatic Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R-C of Billy Johnson and Scott Maxwell out front for the second straight race, as the team also won at their home track, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park near Toronto earlier this month.

"This race," Maxwell said, "was really won in the pits. Our pit stops really helped keep us out front."

"I donít think we had the fastest car out there today," Johnson said. Indeed, they didnít; that would be the pole-sitting Porsche of Burkett and Miller. That car had the fastest lap of the race - 57.334 seconds - but the winning Shelby Mustang wasnít far back at 57.434.

Burkett Captures Pole In Quest For First CJ Wilson Racing Continental Tire Challenge Victory

By Steven Cole Smith, IMSA Wire Service

Is this the weekend?

"Thatís been a big topic of conversation in the transporter," said Danny Burkett. "When is our first win coming?"

After all, C.J. Wilson Racing, the team owned by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim baseball pitcher, is used to winning in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge ST class, when they ran Mazda MX-5s.

But after stepping up to the faster GS class in 2016, and a pair of Porsche Cayman GT4s, itís been close, but no cigar.

Ford GT Takes Pole At Lime Rock In Qualifying Action As Hot As The Weather

Steven Cole Smith, IMSA Wire Service

LAKEVILLE, Conn. - Apparently, the idea that it might be coolish in New England this time of the year is a cruel rumor, as the temperature at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut, was officially 95 degrees just after 4:30 p.m. Friday - at the same time, it was five degrees cooler in Atlanta and Orlando.

Thatís when qualifying for GT Le Mans, Prototype Challenge and GT Daytona took place for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championshipís Northeast Grand Prix. And thereís no question the heat played a part in qualifying - pavement temperature was approaching 140 degrees.

In GT Le Mans - the first time this class has been at Lime Rock since the American Le Mans Series era ended in 2013 - Richard Westbrook took the pole in the No. 67 Chip Ganassi Ford GT with a time of 50.748 seconds. The Ford GT has dominated GT Le Mans class since its first win May 1 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca - including winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans - but the session here closed under a red flag when the No. 66 team Ford GT driven by Joey Hand stopped on track, out of gas.

Porsche's CJ Wilson Racing Captures Second Pole In Continental Qualifying At Lime Rock Park

CJ Wilson Racingís Danny Burkett gave Porsche its third TOTAL Pole Award in 2016 IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge competition, leading qualifying for the second time this season with a lap of 57.458 (95.8 mph) in the No. 33 ONE Capital Management/MotorOilMatters.org Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

"The key was going out early and getting in a good lap quickly," said Burkett, who gave the new Cayman its first Grand Sport (GS) pole at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in April. He will be joined in Saturdayís race by Marc Miller. "We knew the tires would wear quickly with the heat. I was nervous that my time wouldnít hold up, and I kept asking on the radio, ĎStill P-1? Still P-1?í I didnít think I could have gone much quicker, but that was all we needed."

Scott Maxwell, a three-time pole winner in 2016 competition, came up short by a mere 0.016 seconds in the No. 15 Multimatic Motorsports Ford Shelby GT350R-C co-driven by Billy Johnson, running 57.474 (95.8 mph). The pair hold a 10-point lead in the GS standings over Burkett and Miller, 158-148. Paul Holton was third in the No. 76 C360R Shelby co-driven by Pierre Kleinubing, with a lap of 57.811 (95.2 mph).

Porsche's CJ Wilson Racing Seeking First GS Victory In Continental Tire Challenge Race At Lime Rock Park

CJ Wilson Racing takes a pair of new Porsches to Lime Rock Park this weekend, seeking its first Grand Sport (GS) class victory as the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge opens the second half of its 2016 season as part of the IMSA WeatherTech Northeast Grand Prix.

Marc Miller and Danny Burkett co-drive the No. 33 ONE Capital Management/MotorOilMatters.org Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport for the team owned by Major League Baseball pitcher C.J. Wilson. The duo is riding a streak of three consecutive podium finishes, including second-place results at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Tyler McQuarrie and Till Bechtolscheimer share the teamís No. 35 Cayman.

"We are just past the halfway point of the season and I can look back at some frustrating Ďcoulda, woulda, shouldaí moments to grab our first win of the season," Miller said. "When we look at things overall and where we sit after five rounds we know we can make improvements, we know we can execute better and luck is going to swing our way. It is up to us to find an edge somewhere and capitalize on the opportunities that present themselves over the next five races. Hopefully we can put ourselves in a position to do that and get that elusive first GS victory."

Mazda Prototypes continue to show plenty of speed in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition. On Saturday, Tristan Nunez claimed his second TOTAL Pole Award of the campaign, leading qualifying for Sundayís Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (live, FS1, 11 a.m. ET).

Nunez turned a lap of 1:10.126 (126.2 mph) on the 2.459-mile, 10-turn circuit in the No. 55 Mazda Prototype. After running diesel-powered Prototypes for the past two seasons, the team switched to gasoline power for 2016. Nunez captured the first pole for the car at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and joined co-driver Jonathan Bomarito in finishing third at Detroit, the best finish for the Mazda Prototype.

"Qualifying is good and all, but we have one focus and thatís to win the race tomorrow," Nunez said. "Everyoneís prepared for that. Action Express Corvette Daytona Prototype Takes Two-Point Lead Following Round Three At Watkins Glen
