Formula E Brings Racing Return To Switzerland

The FIA Formula E Championship will once again make history in the upcoming season - bringing circuit racing back to Switzerland for the first time in over 60 years, with the inaugural Zurich E-Prix set to take place on June 10.

The updated calendar was published following the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Paris today, with Zurich adding to the exciting list of new destinations on the 2017/18 schedule - joining Santiago, Sao Paulo and Rome who are also hosting Formula E for the very first time.

Racing had previously been forbidden in Switzerland for decades, with the last event taking place at Bremgarten circuit in 1954. However, a law change in 2015 lifted restrictions on fully-electric racing and paved the way for Formula E to bring electrifying wheel-to-wheel action to the streets of Zurich.

Vergne Victorious, Di Grassi Crowned Champion

Lucas di Grassi is the new FIA Formula E champion after taking a solid seventh place in the Hydro-Quebec Montreal ePrix.

With his title rival Sebastien Buemi endured another torrid afternoon, di Grassi was able to play the percentages, keep out of trouble and bring his ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport car home safely for the six points that were more than enough to wrap up the championship.

“This journey started three years ago, when we started season one,” he said. “We got a lot of good results - arrived in London fighting for the championship - even though I was disqualified from winning a race. Season two, it was the same situation - again I got disqualified from winning a race and now, finally, I came here as an underdog, 10 points behind and I had the nerves to keep it calm and did the job yesterday. Today, I managed to bring it home, I’m so happy for the team, so happy for the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport guys - they really deserve it. This season was our toughest I would say. I had to do one race with a broken fibula, I really had luck on my side in some races, Hong Kong and Mexico for example. So, I guess this was our year and it’s extremely satisfying and I’m going to celebrate and party a lot tonight.”

2017 Formula E: Di Grassi Win Sets Up Thrilling Finale

For the first time this season there is a different name at the top of the FIA Formula E Championship points table, after Lucas di Grassi delivered a near-perfect performance to win the inaugural Hydro-Quebec Montreal ePrix.

Di Grassi came into the weekend 10-points in arrears, but that was reduced to seven as he beat title rival Sebastien Buemi in a head-to-head fight for Julius Baer pole position, claiming three bonus points in the process.

But Buemi would not line-up on the front row. In the second practice session, he made a slight mis-judgement at the high-speed chicane that leads onto the start/finish straight. He clipped the inside wall with his left front wheel, which pitched him into the exit wall at high speed.

Fortunately, he was unharmed, but the force of the impact damaged the battery. With his Renault e.dams team having already used its ‘joker’ spare unit, the switch meant he would incur a 10-place grid penalty, dropping him to 12th.

Di Grassi made perfect use of his pole to sprint off into a comfortable lead, meanwhile Buemi was caught up in the midfield melee. Contact with Andretti’s Robin Frijns on the opening lap bent his steering and he dropped back to 16th place.

Porsche Set To Compete In Formula E From 2019/20 Season

Porsche has today revealed plans for a factory-backed works team to compete in the all-electric FIA Formula E Championship starting in season six. As part of a new strategy and realignment of Porsche’s existing motorsport programme, the German manufacturer has committed to join Formula E from the 2019/20 season.

Alejandro Agag, Founder & CEO of Formula E, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Porsche to the FIA Formula E Championship. If somebody told me when we started this project five years ago, that we’d be announcing a partnership with a brand like Porsche, I wouldn’t have believed it. To have a name like Porsche in Formula E, with all it represents in terms of racing and heritage - and in terms of sport cars - is an inflexion point in our quest to change the public perception about electric cars. The electric revolution continues, and Formula E remains the championship for that revolution.”

2017 New York City GP: Formula E Race Recap - Bird Flies High With New York Double

Sam Bird followed up his win in the inaugural FIA Formula E Qualcomm New York City ePrix with an emphatic victory in the second race of the double-header event held on the Brooklyn Circuit.

The DS Virgin Racing star produced a faultless lap to record his first pole position of the season, but he was beaten off the line by the Mahindra of Felix Rosenqvist, and the Swede held on out front during the opening stages.

Bird treated the fans who packed the grandstands to a masterclass in overtaking, executing a perfectly-judged move under braking for the hairpin at Turn 6. Once he was ahead, he simply drove away from the field. Even two Full Course Yellow periods – one of which was brought out when his DS Virgin team-mate Alex Lynn stopped on track – could deter him, and by the finish he was over 11 seconds clear.

Bird Soars To Historic Qualcomm New York City Eprix Win

NEW YORK CITY, USA (July 15, 2017) - Sam Bird became the first driver to win an international motor race in New York, with a superb drive in the FIA Formula E Qualcomm New York City ePrix.

The DS Virgin Racing driver had to work hard for his win. His rookie team-mate Alex Lynn scored a stunning pole position on his debut, while fellow front row starter Daniel Abt of ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport both had to be overcome before the Brit could lead the race.

Once he worked his way into the lead, Bird pulled out a comfortable advantage, which meant he was able to re-join still in top spot following his mandatory mid-race car change. However, he could not afford to relax in the closing stages.

When a broken driveshaft caused Nick Heidfeld to stop at the side of the road, the Qualcomm Safety Car was deployed and Bird’s lead over the TECHEETAH of Jean-Eric Vergne was neutralised.

Sebastien Buemi has extended his lead in the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship to 32 points after picking up his 12th career win in the all-electric single-seater series.

However, the Renault e.dams driver was not first across the line around the revamped Tempelhofring airfield circuit, but when on-the-road winner Felix Rosenqvist was given a 10-second penalty for an unsafe release in the pits, he was there to pick up the pieces.

With a large part of the fanatical 24,000-strong crowd who filled the grandstands attending the event over the weekend there to cheer him on, Buemi was handed the winner’s trophy by Formula E super fan James Harmon, creating an emotional coda to a fantastic event.

Buemi Hands Renault EDams Emotional Paris Win

Sebastien Buemi gave Renault e.dams its most important win of the year by producing a dominant display in front of its home crowd in the Qatar Airways Paris ePrix - round six of the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship.

From Julius Baer pole position, Buemi defended stoutly into the first corner from the charging Jean-Eric Vergne. He then established a small but comfortable lead, as the two leaders eased away from the chasing pack.

However, this wasn’t to be Vergne’s day and broken steering sent him crashing out of the race. The Qualcomm Safety Car was deployed, which bunched up the field and gave DS Virgin Racing’s Jose Maria Lopez a shot at fighting for the win.

Buemi Becomes Hat-Trick Hero In Buenos Aires

Sebastien Buemi has made Formula E history by becoming the first driver to win three races in a row.

Victory for the Renault e.dams ace continues the perfect start to his title defence. It was his ninth win in the all-electric street racing series, and the 12th for the team. That means Renault e.dams have now won half of all the Formula E races that have taken place.

But, in front of 21,000 enthusiastic fans, Buemi had to work hard for his victory. From his first-ever Julius Baer pole position, Lucas di Grassi (ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport) led away at the start, while Jean-Eric Vergne slotted his TECHEETAH into second place.

Di Grassi was struggling with his car, and in quick succession he was passed by Vergne and then Buemi. TECHEETAH uses the same powertrain as Renault e.dams, but there was nothing Vergne could do to stop Buemi charging by into the lead.
