Pro Stock's Deric Kramer Bringing Confidence, First Win To Home Track For Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals

MORRISON, Colo. – A lot has changed since the last time Deric Kramer raced at his home track, Bandimere Speedway. The Sterling, Colo., native picked up his first career Pro Stock win earlier during the 2018 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season and is now on the verge of earning his first career berth in the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship.

All of it is a new feeling for Kramer heading into this weekend’s 39th annual Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway, but it is a welcome one as he prepares to race in front of family and friends in his American Ethanol Chevrolet Camaro. The Pro Stock victory in Topeka earlier this season was a huge career accomplishment for Kramer, and he’s looking to have a career-best showing this weekend in Denver as well.

“It’s definitely going to be a cool feeling,” said Kramer, who is currently 10th in points. “There’s definitely a ton of people there and it’s fun for everyone to be there and enjoy it. There’s no other track like it and I think that’s the best part. Denver is unique. There’s nothing at that elevation. The track is literally carved out of a side of a mountain and you’re looking out across the city.”

Funny Car Standout Tommy Johnson Jr Ready To Finally Break Through For First Time At Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals

MORRISON, Colo. – Tommy Johnson Jr. has enjoyed a lot of success at Bandimere Speedway, the site of this weekend’s 39th annual Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals, throughout his standout NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series career in a number of different classes. He hasn’t tasted the ultimate success on the mountain and that’s something he’s looking to change in 2018.

Johnson has been runner-up four different times in four different classes, including last year in Funny Car in his 10,000-horsepower Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger R/T. The fan-favorite track is a top destination for Johnson as well, and his sponsorship with Dodge makes the kickoff event to the NHRA's three-race Western Swing even more important. Getting that ultimate satisfaction with a first trip to the winner’s circle would be the perfect capper to the weekend for Johnson.

“The Mopar and Dodge people are definitely hardcore and die-hards, and they turn out in full force at this race,” said Johnson, who is currently seventh in Funny Car points. “The whole buildup to this race with the block party and everything that goes on, it’s great. I would certainly like to win this one, not only because I drive a Dodge but I’ve been a runner-up there in every class I’ve raced there. That’s been a little aggravating and I have to win this race one of these years.”

First-Time Top Fuel Winner Blake Alexander Anxious To Make Debut At Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals

MORRISON, Colo. – After securing his first career NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Top Fuel win a month ago, Blake Alexander gets to enjoy another first at this weekend’s 39th annual Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. The event will mark the first time the young standout will race in Denver and Alexander is eager to continue his recent momentum.

Alexander’s first professional win came in Norwalk, a surreal moment for the driver who had made his first career final round appearance a month prior. But Alexander and his team have progressed at a rapid rate in part-time action in 2018, and the thrilling victory in his 10,000-horsepower Pronto Auto Service dragster has only motivated Alexander more for his first trip to Bandimere Speedway.

Racing At Bandimere Speedway Often Brings Out The Best In Funny Car's Jack Beckman At Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals

MORRISON, Colo. – Racing at Bandimere Speedway will forever be a special experience for Jack Beckman for a variety of reasons. While at Lowry Air Force base in Denver in 1984, Beckman attended his first race at the one-of-a-kind facility, following up that memorable weekend at the track with another 23 years later when he won there for the first time in Funny Car.

Two more wins have followed at Bandimere Speedway for the 2012 Funny Car world champion, making the place as special now as it was when he first experienced it 34 years ago. Beckman hopes to add a fourth win at the track in his 10,000-horsepower Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T, as the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series kicks off the famed Western Swing in Denver with the 39th annual Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals powered by Mopar, July 20-22.

“We won there in 2007 and that was my first full year in Funny Car, and that was one of my highest highs there,” Beckman said. “Every time I go back there it’s a little bit of a pinch-me moment because it takes me back to when I was 18 years old and watching my heroes race their cars there in 1984. It’s just such a special place because it’s breathtaking. There’s only one track carved into a mountain. The car never sounds the same, it doesn’t idle the same and it doesn’t accelerate the same. Things are just different and you better have taken the time to prepare yourself.”

Defending Pro Stock World Champ Bo Butner Hopes To Start Second Half Of 2018 With Win At NHRA New England Nationals

EPPING, N.H. – At this weekend’s NHRA New England Nationals at New England Dragway, Bo Butner hopes to start the second half of the 2018 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season the same way he started the first half, and that is with a win. Should that happen, it might also put the defending Pro Stock world champ on track to end 2018 the same way he did a season ago.

Butner won the final race of 2017 to clinch his first career world championship in Pro Stock, following that up with a victory at the 2018 season-opener in his Jim Butner Auto Chevrolet Camaro. A recent slump dropped Butner as low as eighth in points, but as evidenced by his performance a season ago, Butner knows he team is capable of bouncing back.

“All of us have raced a long time, so you do know those times are going to come,” said Butner, who is currently seventh in Pro Stock points. “Nothing is forever, but as long as everybody is working to get better, everybody is great. We’re going to stick with it. The pressure makes you better. If you’re going to fold, it’s the wrong sport and the wrong class. We want to get back into being a top four car. We just have to get our car back and get back in a groove.”

Brittany Force (Top Fuel), Matt Hagan (Funny Car), and Erica Enders (Pro Stock) were last year’s winners of the event that will be televised on FOX Sports 1, including live finals coverage starting at 1:00 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, July 8. It is the 13th of 24 events in 2018 and will take place for the first time in July. Butner, who has six career victories, is seeking his first win at the track, a result that would certainly have him trending back in the right direction.

Two-Time Funny Car Event Winner Ron Capps Feeds Off Excited Fanbase At NHRA New England Nationals

EPPING, N.H. – The bigger and more excitable the fanbase, the better Ron Capps seems to perform. It’s one reason why the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Funny Car world champion enjoys heading to New England Dragway, the site of this weekend’s sixth annual NHRA New England Nationals, where Capps will again be greeted by the huge fanbase in the area.

It has already brought out the best in Capps on two occasions in the first five years of the race, as the veteran claimed Epping wins in 2014 and 2016 in his 10,000-horsepower NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T. A recent strong stretch has him confident he can pull off a third win at the facility, giving him the most for any NHRA driver at the fan-favorite event.

“You feed off of people in the area,” Capps said. “For some reason, I just feed off of that. The first year we went to Epping, we were bombarded with appearance requests. It was my first time being in the area, and being around the Boston fans and it was just crazy. Right away, I fed off that. We did well, we won and set the track record, and it was only natural it seemed like.”

Top Fuel's Mike Salinas Not Satisfied With Impressive Progress Heading To NHRA New England Nationals

EPPING, N.H. – There has been a lot for Mike Salinas to celebrate in what will be his most extensive season on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series circuit. But after earning his first final round appearance in just his 25th race, the Top Fuel driver is not satisfied.

Despite being young in his Top Fuel career, Salinas has already made a big impression, currently sitting ninth in points heading to New England Dragway for this weekend’s sixth annual NHRA New England Nationals. That includes making a final round appearance last month in Bristol driving his 10,000-horsepower Scrappers Racing dragster, but as the second half of 2018 begins, Salinas is aiming for more approaching the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship.

“Our goal is to try to get to sixth or seventh (by the Countdown),” Salinas said. “Then you can do something from there. The important thing is nothing we’ve done is good enough yet. Our standards are pretty high and we want to keep moving forward. We’re learning so much, but we just don’t want to be here to be here. I’m a pretty competitive guy and I don’t like losing.”

2018 NHRA: Funny Car's Bob Tasca III Bringing Momentum And Confidence He Can Win To Home Track For NHRA New England Nationals

EPPING, N.H. – Everything is starting to go according to plan for Funny Car driver Bob Tasca III, and that could make for a memorable celebration when the Hope, R.I., native heads to New England Dragway for the sixth annual NHRA New England Nationals on July 6-8.

Coming off his first final round of the 2018 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season at Bristol in his 10,000-horsepower Ford Performance Shelby Mustang, Tasca is thrilled with the progress his team has made in recent weeks. They have jumped into the top 10 in the loaded Funny Car class, and Tasca, who has returned to full-time competition for the first time since 2014, believes his team is building up to something big at a track where he made his first pass.

“This is what I dreamed about,” said Tasca, who has four career wins. “I dreamed about being in a program and having a race car and a team that can win races and run low E.T. at will. We have that kind of car going into Epping. That’s my home track, the first track I ever went down and there’s not a person there who is not pulling for you. That’s the stuff you dream about as a kid, and I’ve never been more excited about racing than I am now.”
