Defending Funny Car World Champ JR Todd Has A Chance To Make History At Chevrolet Performance US Nationals

Todd has back-to-back wins at the Big Go and can become the first
Funny Car driver in NHRA history to win the prestigious race three straight years

INDIANAPOLIS – For someone who grew up watching drag racing’s biggest race, winning the prestigious Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals was a career-making moment for J.R. Todd. But the Funny Car standout didn’t stop there after winning in 2017. He followed it up by becoming just the sixth driver in class history to win the Big Go back-to-back years, using that momentum to win his first NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series world championship.

Now Todd can make even more history on drag racing’s biggest stage at this weekend’s 65th annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. With a victory in his 11,000-horsepower DHL Toyota Camry, Todd would become the first Funny Car driver in NHRA history to win the legacy-making race three straight years. It’s a fact not lost on Todd, leaving him incredibly motivated to compete this weekend in Indy.

“To go there and try to win for the third time in a row, that would be pretty cool, there’s no doubt about that,” said Todd, who has 18 career wins. “Sometimes you think about it, and it’s just unbelievable to me. Going there as a kid, watching guys like (John) Force and (Ron) Capps, and now racing against them, it’s a surreal feeling. I never expected to win this event in Funny Car, and to do it back-to-back is pretty awesome. To try to do it three times and be the only one in the class ever to do would be something. But I’m not going to try to put a bunch of pressure on myself.”

2019 NHRA: Top Fuel Terry Mcmillen Aims For Repeat Win At Chevrolet Performance US Nationals As Top 10 Points Battle Looms Large

A year later, the moment is surreal for Terry McMillen. The Top Fuel veteran broke through with the biggest win of his career with his Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals victory in 2018, and it’s a weekend that is still vivid in his mind. But for McMillen, the best way to remember it is to have another spectacular Indy moment on drag racing’s biggest stage, and it would go a long way in helping his Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship chances as well.

McMillen currently sits 10th in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Top Fuel points standings heading into this weekend’s 65th annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. But it’s just seven points ahead of Scott Palmer and only 41 points in front of Billy Torrence heading into the last race of the regular season. With an increased amount of points via the points-and-a-half system at the Big Go, McMillen knows he needs another impressive showing in his 11,000-horsepower AMALIE Motor Oil XTERMIGATOR dragster at Indy.

2019 NHRA: Coming Off 150th Career Win, Legendary Funny Car Driver John Force Ready For 65th Annual Chevrolet Performance US Nationals

The iconic 16-time Funny Car world champion has four career victories at the Big Go

INDIANAPOLIS – Coming off the latest landmark victory in his legendary NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series career, John Force has a chance for another noteworthy achievement on drag racing’s grandest stage. The 16-time Funny Car world champ recently picked up his 150th career victory, putting him in prime shape to compete for a win at the 65th annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, which takes place Aug. 28-Sept. 2 at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.

While the sport’s most prestigious event turns 65 this year, Force will try to earn his fifth career win at the Big Go, entering the final regular season race on a strong note in his 11,000-horsepower PEAK/Chevrolet Performance Chevrolet Camaro SS. The 150-time event winner is currently third in points, putting Force on a good path approaching Indy and the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship, where he will try to win his unprecedented 17th title. For now, though, Force’s immediate focus is doing well on drag racing’s biggest race.

2019 NHRA: Line, B Force And Hagan Secure Top Spots At Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals

BRAINERD, Minn. – Pro Stock driver and Minnesota native Jason Line secured his second No. 1 qualifier of the 2019 season and the 55th of his career at the 38th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.

Brittany Force (Top Fuel) and Matt Hagan (Funny Car) also qualified No. 1 in their respective categories at the 17th of 24 races during the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Line secured the top spot when his run of 6.606-seconds at 207.27 mph from Friday held up in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro. He will race for his first win this season on Sunday where he will face Wally Stroupe in the first round. Erica Enders is right behind in second after her Friday run of 6.616 at 206.99, while Bo Butner finished third in qualifying after going 6.624 at 207.08.

“My car is really good. It’s certainly the best car I’ve had in years,” said Line. “We made four really good runs and that’s not always easy to do. It’s been very predictable and it’s doing what we ask it to, so that’s a good feeling.”

2019 NHRA: Hagan, S Torrence & Line Pilot To Provisional No 1 Spots At Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals

BRAINERD, Minn. – Matt Hagan leads the pack in Funny Car at Brainerd International Raceway, powering to the top qualifying spot on Friday during the 38th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel) and Jason Line (Pro Stock) are also provisional No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the 17th of 24 races during the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season. The event is also the one of the last chances for drivers to secure a place in NHRA's playoffs, the Countdown to the Championship, so the fight for qualifying points is fierce.

Hagan went 3.890-seconds at 328.46 mph in his Mopar Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody Funny Car. If it holds, Hagan would earn his first No. 1 qualifier of 2019 and 35th in his career. Jack Beckman drove to the second spot with a 3.908 at 325.53, and Robert Hight sits in third after a pass of 3.924 at 326.48.

“Rolling here and having two great laps off the bat, there’s a lot of confidence right now,” said Hagan. “The car was digging early, and I knew it was on a good run but you’re trying not to oversteer it either and let it settle back into the groove. Dickie (Venables, Crew Chief) has a lot of confidence in the combo that we’ve got; the window’s a lot bigger right now and this is the momentum we need to head into the countdown.”

Brainerd Atmosphere Brings Out The Best In Funny Car Star Ron Capps At Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals

BRAINERD, Minn. - There’s a certain affinity Ron Capps has with Brainerd International Raceway and its huge on-site campground known as "The Zoo." After all, there is a part of the campground named after the Funny Car world champion, a corner aptly called "Capps Corner." It’s an honor the veteran takes seriously and that is evident in Capps’ track record at the fan-favorite facility.

Capps has five career wins in Brainerd, the site of this weekend’s 38th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, the most recent coming in 2014 to finish off a stretch of three straight Funny Car wins at the track. In the midst of another solid NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season, Capps hopes to start a new streak in his 11,000-horsepower NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. After all, he feels a certain responsibility when it comes to performing well in Brainerd.

"When the fans started ‘Capps Corner’ you couldn’t ask for a bigger compliment," said Capps, who has 63 career wins. "There’s certain accolades you get, but to have a corner named after you at Brainerd in ‘The Zoo’ it ranks right up there with anything. It’s a cool thing. The Canadians that come down are so much fun, and just the people that come out, you almost have to pay them back by going out to see them. Obviously it’s paid great dividends for me on the track."

2019 NHRA: Pro Stock Jason Line Looks To Change Luck At Home Track

BRAINERD, Minn. – Hailing from Wright, Minn., the annual visit to Brainerd International Raceway, the site of the 38th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals on Aug. 15-18, is always a welcome trip for Jason Line. But the Pro Stock standout and three-time world champion wouldn’t mind his luck changing at the facility just over an hour from his hometown.

Line has enjoyed an incredible list of accomplishments during his standout NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Pro Stock career, but it doesn’t actually include a trip to the winner’s circle in Brainerd. He’s been to the finals four times at the fan-favorite facility, most recently in 2016, and he even won the race in 2014, but the finals were finished in Indy that year, meaning he hasn’t enjoyed the ultimate glory at the track in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro. With the veteran seeking his first win of 2019, this year would be the perfect time to win in Brainerd.

“That place has been kind of tough for me, but the older I get the more relaxed I get, so maybe this year it will help me,” Line said. “I’m looking forward to going, that’s for sure. I want to enjoy doing what I do for the amount of time I have left doing it. Going to Brainerd, the biggest thing is seeing my core group of friends and family that I started racing with years ago. It’s a good reminder of a lot of things, and there’s a first time for everything.”

2019 NHRA: Salinas, Tasca And Coughlin Seal No 1 Qualifiers At Magic Dry Organic Absorbent NHRA Northwest Nationals

KENT, Wash. – Mike Salinas secured his fourth No. 1 qualifier of the 2019 NHRA season in Top Fuel on Saturday at the Magic Dry Organic Absorbent NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways.

Bob Tasca III (Funny Car) and Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) are also No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the 16th of 24 races during the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season. It is also the last of three races on the NHRA’s famed Western Swing.

Salinas’ run of 3.694-seconds at 327.66 mph in his Scrappers Racing dragster on Friday held up, giving him five career No. 1 qualifiers. Salinas will race for his third win this season on Sunday. Brittany Force qualified second after her Friday run of 3.702 at 326.87, while defending world champion and points leader Steve Torrence, who has eight wins this season, finished third in qualifying after going 3.705 at 328.46.

“Tomorrow is a different day, and you just have to go one round at a time and don’t get too far ahead of yourself or you get in trouble,” Salinas said. “The rest of the guys know we have our stuff together. Our team has their stuff together, and the driver just has to do his job and have fun with it.”
