NHRA Announces 2019 Pro Stock Car Event Schedule

GLENDORA, Calif. (November 10, 2018) – NHRA announced today that in 2019, the Pro Stock category will compete in 18 events in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, which competitors believe is the “sweet spot” for the category.

“We think the new schedule will increase participation by relieving the economic burden and time commitment that comes with 24 events, which will ignite more intense competition. All of that should make for compelling action and drive fan interest,” said Josh Peterson, NHRA vice president of racing administration.

2018 NHRA: Pro Stock Veteran Greg Anderson Looking For Bright Spot, Historic Win At Auto Club NHRA Finals

GLENDORA, Calif. – A consistent NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series regular season did not lead to Pro Stock Greg Anderson contending for a fifth world championship during the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship. But the longtime standout still has a chance to end his 2018 campaign on a good note at this weekend’s 54th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, where Anderson will look for his 13th win at the facility.

That would give Anderson the most wins in Pro Stock history at the historic facility, breaking the current tie with the legendary Bob Glidden. It is something that is definitely on Anderson’s mind heading to the season-finale, as is finishing his 2018 season on the best note possible in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro.

2018 NHRA: Funny Car Standouts JR Todd & Robert Hight Set For Championship Duel At Auto Club NHRA Finals

GLENDORA, Calif. – In order to win his first career NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series world championship, Funny Car standout J.R. Todd knew he had to put together something special during the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship. He has done that, advancing to four final rounds in the first five playoff races, but one major obstacle remains at this weekend’s 54th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona if Todd wants to claim a world title.

His victory in Vegas – Todd’s second in the playoffs – gave him a 74-point lead over defending Funny Car world champion Robert Hight heading into the final race of the season. But with the point-and-a-half system in play for Pomona and up to 191 points on the line to close out the year, Todd knows he still has work to do in his 10,000-horsepower DHL Toyota Camry.

“I said earlier this year if we could win four Countdown races we would have a shot at the championship,” Todd said. “We haven't won four, but we've gone to four finals and that's what it takes along with getting some help. We were 50 back going into Charlotte and we were thinking we need some help now to make up some ground and we got some. Then to cap it off in Vegas with a win, it was nice to get all the points we could and take that into Pomona. Points and a half will make it interesting. We just need to maintain what we've been doing and go to the later rounds.”

Top Fuel's Mike Salinas Seeks First Win, Top-Five Finish To Close Out 2018 Season At Auto Club NHRA Finals

GLENDORA, Calif. – Mike Salinas’ first full season in Top Fuel has included his first final round appearance and a berth in the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship. By almost every account, he has had an impressive start to his career but Salinas is far from satisfied heading to this weekend’s 54th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway.

Salinas is currently seventh in points and with a good showing in his 10,000-horsepower Scrappers Racing dragster to finish the 2018 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season, a top five finish would be possible. That would be ideal to close out this year, especially as Salinas has big thoughts and plans for his 2019 Top Fuel season.

“For us, we need to win this race,” Salinas said. “I know what we need to do for next year, so a win in Pomona would help us hit the off-season hard to make sure what we come out strong in 2019. We’re not here to mess around. I’m a little disappointed in the whole year and I expected better for what we put in. But we’re excited to head to Pomona. It’s an awesome place and we’ve got a very good fanbase there, so we want to give them an experience they won’t forget.”

2018 NHRA: Defending Funny Car World Champ Robert Hight Ready To Finish The Job For Second Straight Year At Auto Club NHRA Finals

GLENDORA, Calif. – As far as Robert Hight is concerned, it doesn’t get any better than ending the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season at historic Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, Calif. with a world championship on the line. That will be the scenario for a second straight year when the defending Funny Car world champion heads to the birthplace of NHRA drag racing for the 54th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals, Nov. 8-11 at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

After five of the six races in the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship, Hight is second in points – 74 behind J.R. Todd – on the strength of two playoff wins in his 10,000-horsepower Auto Club Chevrolet Camaro SS. He’s fought through a broken collarbone to stay in the Funny Car hunt and Hight will head to Pomona excited about the chance to win a third career world title.

2018 NHRA: Jegs NHRA Sportsnationals Returns To National Trail Raceway For 2019 Season

The JEGS NHRA SPORTSnationals, widely regarded as one of the biggest and most prestigious weekends in Sportsman racing, will return to National Trail Raceway in 2019, as the race will take place at the facility on Sept. 20-22.

The highly-regarded race was previously held at National Trail Raceway from 2005-15 before being held at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky., for the past three seasons. Now it returns to National Trail Raceway, located just outside Columbus, Ohio, in 2019 after Chris Payne purchased the facility from NHRA in 2017 and also recently added Jay Livingston as the track new general manager and co-owner.

“We are excited to be working with JEGS Automotive to bring the JEGS Sportsnationals back to historic National Trail Raceway,” said Jay Livingston. “We look forward to hosting this event and welcome the hundreds of racers that will be attending the only all Sportsman National event. This will be an event that every sportsman racer wants to mark on their calendar.”

A diverse field of 11 rookie drivers representing the four NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series categories, Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle, were announced by NHRA officials and the Automobile Club of Southern California as the eligible candidates for the 2018 Automobile Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award.

The award, which is presented during the NHRA’s annual championship awards ceremony on Monday, Nov. 12 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland in Hollywood, Calif., recognizes the top rookie competitor in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series and offers a $20,000 prize and traditional trophy to the winner. 2018 NHRA: Top Fuel Points Leader Steve Torrence Focused On Task At Hand With First Championship Within Reach At NHRA Toyota Nationals

LAS VEGAS – On the cusp of winning his first NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series world championship, Steve Torrence is keeping the status quo. It has worked perfectly through the first four races of the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship and the Top Fuel points leader is continuing to rely on that mindset heading to this weekend’s 18th annual NHRA Toyota Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

It marks the penultimate race of the 2018 NHRA season and Torrence is firmly in command in his 10,000-horsepower Capco Contractors/Torrence Motorsports dragster, currently holding a 169-point lead over Clay Millican. Torrence has won the first four races of the Countdown to the Championship – the first time in NHRA history that has happened in Top Fuel or Funny Car – and he can close out his first world title this weekend in Las Vegas.

“To be honest, we don’t change anything,” Torrence said. “We just keep going. We just need to stay focused on the task at hand, try to qualify well and go some rounds. That’s what has worked well for us and you’ve got to keep your eye on the prize. We’ve gotten to where we’re at staying extremely focused, taking it one race, one round at a time. I think that’s the only way you can do things. We’ve learned to stay focused on the task and not let anything deviate you.”
