2019 NHRA: NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Powers Back To Houston For Mopar Express Lane NHRA Springnationals Presented By Pennzoil

BAYTOWN, Texas - The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series makes the first of its two annual trips to Texas when it returns to Houston Raceway Park powered by Pennzoil on April 12-14 for the 32nd annual Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals presented by Pennzoil.

It is the fifth of 24 races during the 2019 NHRA season, and plenty of high-powered, 10,000-horsepower thrills will be on display at one of the quickest tracks on the NHRA circuit. That means fans will be treated to plenty of 330-plus mph action in the Lone Star State, as the track enjoys ideal atmospheric conditions thanks to its proximity to Trinity Bay. With the top stars in NHRA’s nitro classes looking to start the season strong, fans can expect more excitement in 2019.

Teams in Top Fuel and Funny Car will again battle for an important early-season race victory and critical world championship points at the stop just outside of Houston. Brittany Force (Top Fuel) and J.R. Todd (Funny Car) were last year’s winners of the event, which will include live finals coverage on the FOX national broadcast network starting at 3:00 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 14. It marks the NHRA’s 2019 season debut on FOX.

Defending Pro Stock Motorcycle Champ Matt Smith Hopes This Is The Year For First Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals Win

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Defending Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion Matt Smith has never won at Gainesville Raceway in his standout career. But after a thrilling finish to his 2018 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season ended with his third world title, the veteran standout hopes that momentum has carried into 2019.

If it has, Smith will be among the favorites to start the Pro Stock Motorcycle year at its annual opener, the massive 50th annual AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals. Smith won three of the final five races of 2018 on his Denso Auto Parts EBR, setting the speed record at the final event to conclude a thrilling championship run. Now, on an incredible weekend that includes the pinnacle of the NHRA Legends Tour and the "Unfinished Business" showdown featuring eight legendary NHRA drivers in a head-to-head competition, Smith wants his first Gainesville win to be the 50th anniversary race.

"We’ve never won Gainesville, so to win the 50th would be awesome, and we’re coming in loaded and hoping to do some damage," Smith said. "I’m very excited. We’ve got fast motorcycles, we’re coming in as the champ, so we’re looking forward to doing battle with the class. We’ve seen a bunch of people step up this winter, but we think we’ve got the same power as last year and fixed some things, so we should be even faster."

Defending Funny Car Event Winner Jack Beckman Wants More Success At 50th Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals

Jack Beckman is proud of the fact he was able to win for the first time in his Funny Car career at Gainesville Raceway a year ago. But the former world champion is now eager for a second straight win, especially considering the magnitude of this weekend’s massive 50th annual AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals.

The 50th anniversary celebration of one of NHRA’s biggest races isn’t lost on Beckman, who remains a huge fan of the history of the sport. But the Funny Car standout has a chance to make his own indelible mark in the history books in his 10,000-horsepower Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, trying to make history during an incredible weekend that includes the pinnacle of the NHRA Legends Tour and the "Unfinished Business" showdown with eight legendary NHRA drivers in a head-to-head competition.

"I’d rather be the guy who also won back-to-back Gators and the 50th than the guy who won the 49th," said Beckman, who is currently third in the Funny Car points standings. "I’ve won some great events, but I’ve never won one of those special anniversary Wally (trophies). There is not a single one of my national event trophies that wasn’t a big deal, but to win the 50th Gatornationals and get that anniversary trophy, that would be special."

2019 NHRA: Top Fuel's Terry Mcmillen Ready To Celebrate 50th Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals In Grand Style

Terry McMillen put together a memorable weekend to win a historic race a year ago at Indy, and the Top Fuel standout is now trying to add another one at the 50th anniversary of his sponsor’s race, this weekend’s AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.

On a weekend that will include some of NHRA’s biggest legends, the pinnacle of the NHRA Legends Tour and the “Unfinished Business” event with eight legendary NHRA figures facing off in a head-to-head competition, McMillen knows what a Gatornationals win in his 10,000-horsepower AMALIE Motor Oil XTERMIGATOR dragster would mean. He has come close before, finishing as runner-up to Brittany Force in 2016 in a battle of first-time finalists, but this weekend would mark the perfect time to finish the job.

“This weekend will probably be one of the biggest races in NHRA history,” McMillen said. “Being the 50th anniversary, it’s just amazing the people we’ve run into that are heading down there. It gives me goose bumps just thinking about it and how many people are going to be there. To represent Amalie at the 50th Gatornationals is amazing and a dream come true. You couldn’t script it any better. We’ll have a ton of customers, friends and family there, so it’s an exciting time and we want to end up on top.”

Four-Wide Racing Returns To The Strip At Las Vegas Motor Speedway For Denso Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals

LAS VEGAS - After a thrilling debut a year ago, four-wide NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series action returns to thrill the fans at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the 20th annual DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, April 5-7.

A year ago, the speedway widened The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to four lanes, giving fans on the West Coast an opportunity to witness the ultimate thrill ride in drag racing. The fans flocked to the facility in incredible numbers to watch four 10,000 horsepower nitro-burning machines power down the dragstrip simultaneously, and that excitement returns this year with the fourth of 24 events during the 2019 season.

It marks the first of two stops in Las Vegas, with the four-wide set-up giving fans one of the most unique experiences in motorsports. All of the stars in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock will look to grab early-season momentum at the fan-favorite event.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), J.R. Todd (Funny Car) and Vincent Nobile (Pro Stock) were last year’s winners of the event that will be televised on FOX Sports 1, including finals coverage starting at 5:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 7.

Funny Car Legend John Force Hopes To Celebrate 50th Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals With 150th Career Win

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The most successful driver in NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series history will look to hit a historic number at one of the biggest races of the 2019 season. Sixteen-time Funny Car champ John Force is after his 150th career win at the 50th annual AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway on March 14-17, a weekend that will include some of NHRA’s biggest legends.

J. Force is one of them, an iconic driver still competing in the Funny Car ranks, while the 50th anniversary of one of the NHRA’s most legendary races celebrates the pinnacle of the NHRA Legends Tour as well as the "Unfinished Business" event featuring eight legendary NHRA figures facing off in a head-to-head competition. Combined, it’s a weekend that has the legendary Force extremely excited, especially on the cusp of his 150th win in his 10,000-horsepower PEAK Chevrolet Camaro SS.

"It’s exciting to go back again (to Gainesville), especially knowing that the legends will be there: Joe Amato, Ed McCulloch, Kenny Bernstein, Don Prudhomme, Don Garlits, Shirley Muldowney and so many more," J. Force said. "Those are my heroes. To be able to go back and be able to race in front of them, it’s going to be exciting and I really want to do well. I’m going after 150 in my career wins and I hope I can do it in front of those who really matter to me: the fans, the sponsors, and those legends."

2019 NHRA: Funny Car's Tommy Johnson Jr Set To Celebrate 30 Years Of Nitro Racing At Magic Dry Absorbent NHRA Arizona Nationals

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Tommy Johnson Jr.’s first trip to Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park, the site of this weekend’s 35th annual Magic Dry Organic Absorbent NHRA Arizona Nationals, as a nitro driver came in 1989. With the race marking the 30th anniversary of his Top Fuel debut, the now Funny Car championship contender reflected on what three decades of nitro racing has taught him.

"You can definitely see where being a veteran and having experience pays off," said Johnson, who has 17 career wins. "I want to use that now. I think it’s all about maintaining focus throughout the year. It’s a long season and you can’t let the lows get you down or let the highs distract you. That comes from years of experience. When you’ve been there and done that, it helps keep you on track. Being a veteran, it gives you a whole different mindset on racing."

With that in mind, the track just outside of Phoenix holds a special place in Johnson’s heart and he will look to grab his second career win at the early-season NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series race. The Don Schumacher Racing standout lost in the final round of the race a year ago, but is off to a strong start in his 10,000-horsepower Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat.
