2018 NHRA: Defending Top Fuel World Champ Brittany Force Looks To Rebound At AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals

MADISON, Ill. – Defending Top Fuel world champion Brittany Force didn’t have the start she wanted at the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship opener. That means Force has work to do at this weekend’s NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series stop, the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park, but it’s not going to change her approach.

A first-round loss at Maple Grove Raceway on Sunday dropped Force to 10th in points heading into the second of six playoff races, but Force has no problems when it comes to overcoming adversity. She did it last year en route to the championship, did it this season after a season-opening crash in Pomona and plans on continuing to do it in her 10,000-horsepower Monster Energy/Advance Auto Parts dragster to finish out the 2018 season.

“I go into every weekend with the same mindset,” Force said. “We’re there to get our car down the track and put up the best number we can. St. Louis is a big race. We didn’t do well in Reading and we’re ready to come back from that. We’re planning four good qualifying sessions to get us ready for raceday. Our plan is to go after the whole thing and win it. That’s my mindset every weekend.”

Defending Pro Stock World Champ Bo Butner Knows He Has Work To Do At Dodge NHRA Nationals

MOHNTON, Pa. – Starting the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship in ninth place, defending Pro Stock world champ Bo Butner is well aware of the position he’s in heading into the playoff opener at this weekend’s 34th annual Dodge NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.

For Butner to have any shot at repeating in the loaded Pro Stock class, he knows he needs to get off to a quick start in his Jim Butner Auto Chevrolet Camaro. Butner is just fine with that pressure, even if it means having to advance to the final round or win his first race since the season-opener in Pomona. The past three races indicate Butner may have regained his championship form, leaving him focused on repeating his Pro Stock event win from a year ago at Maple Grove.

2018 NHRA: Castellana Races To Current No 1 Qualifying Position In The Pro Mod Category At The Chevrolet Performance US Nationals

BROWSBURG, Ind. - Mike Castellana raced to the current No. 1 qualifying position at the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing, presented by Al-Anabi Performance, is the eighth of 12 events this season.

Castellana powered to the top spot during his first qualifying attempt of the day and was able to better his time during the second session.

In his 2017 Camaro, he posted a pass of 5.783-seconds at 250.92 mph and is the current points leader in the category.

"Frank (Manzo, crew chief) and the crew did a great job," said Castellana. "We made a great run the first one, we tweaked it, and was able to improve upon it, we are real happy. Tomorrow I think we are going to see some really good runs tomorrow and see shuffling around."

2018 NHRA: Todd, Salinas, Gray, And Krawiec Are Provisional Leaders At Chevrolet Performance US Nationals

Defending Funny Car event winner J.R. Todd powered to the top of the category Friday evening during the single qualifying session at the 64th annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.

Mike Salinas (Top Fuel), Tanner Gray (Pro Stock), and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also lead qualifying in their respective categories at the 18th of 24 events on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

Todd’s ran a 3.910-second pass at 325.45 mph in his DHL Toyota Camry during the first of three qualifying days and first of five qualifying sessions. He is on the hunt for his first career Funny Car No. 1 qualifier.

“Listening to (crew chiefs) Todd (Smith) and John Oberhofer before that run back in the pits they weren’t planning on running that good,” Todd stated. “That run is a testament to those guys, the yella fellas, they’re a great group of guys. Three-second runs had been hard for us to come by till Brainerd where we were able to get it tuned up in the semi-finals for one.”

Holding the second position is Bob Tasca III with a 3.928 pass at 322.65 in his Motorcraft Quality Parts Ford Performance Mustang. Points leader Courtney Force secured the No. 1 position in the Countdown to the Championship during tonight’s qualifying session.

2018 NHRA: E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series Star Stevie Jackson Out For Redemption At Chevrolet Performance US Nationals

Stevie “Fast” looking to get back on track after recent struggles with first victory at the Big Go

INDIANAPOLIS – After two straight disappointing performances during the 2018 E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by J&A Service season, Stevie “Fast” Jackson is looking to get his swagger back and the Big Go could be the perfect place for him to find it.

The NHRA Pro Mod standout has struggled since a crash in Charlotte, dropping from second in points to eighth after failing to qualify at the past two events. After finishing third in points a year ago in his NHRA Pro Mod rookie season, the fan-favorite driver is looking to get back on track and performing well on drag racing’s biggest stage as part of this weekend’s prestigious Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis would be the ideal location.

“It’s been hard to be me when we’ve sucked as much as we’ve sucked lately,” said Jackson, who won two races in 2017. “We’re showing up in Indy ready to go and I want to get that chip on my shoulder again, get that swagger back and perform the way we’re capable of performing. We’ve got winning on our mind and I’m as hungry as I’ve ever been. We expect to do well in Indy and we’re looking forward to this last stretch of the season.”

2018 NHRA: A Number Of Pro Stock Motorcycle Standouts Eye Playoff Spots At Chevrolet Performance US Nationals

Talented riders like two-time Indy winner Steve Johnson, Jimmy Underdahl, Joey Gladstone and rookie Ryan Oehler hope to jump into top 10 with big performance at the Big Go

INDIANAPOLIS – Steve Johnson has tasted victory twice at the prestigious Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, providing a pair of incredible moments in the veteran’s Pro Stock Motorcycle career. Needing a great result at this weekend’s race at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis to advance to the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown the Championship, Johnson’s sole focus is simply trying to gain a third win, knowing full well that would more than take care of his playoff aspirations.

Johnson is currently 12th in points, 19 behind 10th-place Hector Arana, so the rider of the Steve Johnson Racing Suzuki knows he has work to do on drag racing’s biggest stage. But Johnson, who posted Indy wins in 2008 and 2005, isn’t counting points at the moment. Instead, his priority is figuring out the best chance to win the world’s biggest drag race.

2018 NHRA: Funny Car Showdown Set For Chevrolet Performance US Nationals To Determine Final Countdown To The Championship Spots

INDIANAPOLIS – Tim Wilkerson has been in this situation before, needing a strong performance at the prestigious Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals to secure his spot in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship. In fact, it was just a year ago when Wilkerson advanced to the semifinals at the world’s biggest drag race to clinch his playoff position.

Wilkerson needs another clutch performance at this weekend’s Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, as the veteran sits 10th in points with a slim 24-point lead over Bob Tasca III for the final spot in the Countdown to the Championship. But those moments have brought the best out of the 2003 Indy winner and Wilkerson is confident he can rise to the occasion this weekend in his 10,000-horsepower Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang.

"I usually do pretty good at Indy, and our car has been going down the track every run the last few races,” Wilkerson said. “Now is the time to really have your ducks in a row, so we're pretty excited. We know that we can be a fast car there, so hopefully we can continue the trend. We're not going to be lackadaisical about this. Everybody is doing a good job and working hard on the car. We're going to Indy and we're going to fight, fight, fight."
