2010 Gresham: Cole Whitt NASCAR K&N Weekend Race Recap

DRIVER: Cole Whitt (No. 84 Red Bull Toyota)
EVENT: American Fence Association 150 (NASCAR K&N Pro Series East)
DATES: Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010
TRACK: Gresham Motorsports Park, Jefferson, Ga.
RESULTS: Start 8/Finish 2
OVEN NO. 84

Four red flags severely slowed the pace Saturday night at Gresham Motorsports Park. And Cole Whitt was left there to think, salivate and … sweat.

"It was a hot Georgia night. It was killer sitting there," he said. "It was 140 degrees. It’s definitely not enjoyable sitting there with your gear on. Sitting there, waiting. You stop me in the middle of the race … I get ticked off. I feel held back, want to get going again."

Instead of being able to complete his charge to the front, Whitt settled for a second-place finish in the eighth of 10 races on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East schedule. It was Whitt’s third runner-up finish of his rookie stock-car season, and his fifth top five. He moved to third in points — 137 points behind leader Ryan Truex and 71 behind second-place Darrell Wallace Jr.

Whitt qualified a disappointing eighth in the No. 84 Red Bull Toyota, this after timing in first in the first practice session and second in the second. His ascent began in the final third of the race, but four red flags in the final 60 laps had something to say about that.

"It was a really slow charge to the front. The track was hard to pass on," Whitt said. "I was making sure to take care of the car as best we could. Everyone was wearing their car out. Once we got to about 50 to go, we started getting after it — stick your nose in there and get stuff done. It turned into a beat-and-bang deal, that’s why we had so many reds."

The K&N Pro Series East returns Sept. 17 to New Hampshire Motor Speedway — the only two-race venue on the schedule — before the Sept. 24 season finale at Dover International Speedway.

"I really want to get that first win. That’s all I focus on," Whitt said. "You can only knock on the door so many times before they let you in."
