Wilson Wins His First Kentucky Speedway Fil Pole With A Series Track Record Effort

Andretti Autosport driver Stefan Wilson wheeled to his first Firestone Indy Lights (FIL) pole of the season and first at Kentucky Speedway by generating a new series track qualifying record with a 191.659 mph (55.5988 seconds) two-lap average.

The solid run bettered the previous 191.598 (27.8551 seconds) FIL track record set by Hideki Mutoh on Aug. 10, 2007.

The 21-year-old, third-year series driver Sheffield, England will enter his second Kentucky Speedway FIL start ranked third in the championship standings after racing to a total of eight top-five and 10 top-10 series finishes this season.

Wilson’s previous best start this season was second on the Streets of Toronto and he turned that spot into a July 10 victory. He will look to score his sixth top-five series finish in seven starts when he takes the "Kentucky 100" green flag tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.

He placed 14th after starting 10th in his Sept. 4, 2010 Kentucky Speedway FIL debut.

"What a great run that was. It is so great to come to Kentucky Speedway and perform this well on an oval course. After the down week we had last week, it is such a great feeling to come here and perform well. It is fantastic for the team to give me such a great car here. To run this good on an oval is great, too because I really do better on the road courses. This is really a confidence boost for our whole team," Wilson said.

Davey Hamilton Racing driver Brandon Wagner, 24, of Noblesville, Ind., will make his fourth FIL start of the season and third in the series at Kentucky Speedway tomorrow from the second spot on the grid after manufacturing a 190.641 mph (55.8955 seconds) two-lap average. He started and finish eighth in last season’s race at the track.

The "Kentucky 100" leads off a doubleheader race day that additionally features the IZOD IndyCar Series (IICS) "Kentucky Indy 300" at 2:50 p.m. Tickets are available at the speedway gates.
