2012 Daytona 500: NASCAR LIVE Update - Lap 2 Crash, Johnson Out, Danica Damaged!

By PaddockTalk.com Staff Writers

The green flag had just dropped for the NASCAR Sprint Cup 2012 season opener - the Daytona 500 - at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach Florida when Jimmie Johnson and his No. 48 Lowes Chevrolet got loose and hit the wall after over-correcting after being hit from behind by Elliott Sadler. Johnson's car was totaled, but the champion was able to pull himself from the car.

Behind him five different cars with Danica Patrick, David Ragan, Kurt Busch and others took hits. Former IndyCar driver, Danica Patrick lucked out as her No. 10 Godaddy's Chevrolet made contact with Johnson and slid down to the inside of the track - grass - splitting - within inches - of two other distressed cars. Patrick was able to continue, but her car is back in the garage.

Polesitter Carl Edwards and his No. 99 Fastenal Ford and Greg Biffle and his No. 3M Ford led the 43-car field to the starting line and were out in front of the meely behind them.

FOX Broadcaster Darrell Waltrip changed his signature line for the race from "Let's go racing boys!" to "Let's go racing boys and Danica."

This is the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Monday night race ever. Daytona officials were forced to postpone the 54th Daytona 500 for the first time as rain spoiled the event on Sunday.

Winner watch: Keep an eye on three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion who has won numerous races at Daytona, but has never won the Daytona 500. He won his Duel, and was on his way to winning the NASCAR Nationwide race on Saturday until the big crash that took out the top-ten.

Trevor Bayne is the defending Daytona 500 champion. The track has not had a repeat winner in the last ten events.

The FOX is broadcasting the race on TV tonight. Keep checking back for the latest updates.
