2012 Bristol: Chevrolet NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Recap

It was a rough and tumble day in the Food City 500. Richard Childress Racing's (RCR) Jeff Burton, No. 31 BB&T Chevrolet, led the way for Team Chevy when the checkered flag flew at Bristol Motor Speedway. Burton finished sixth and jumped four spots in the standings to 11th place.

Jamie McMurray, continued his strong runs of recent weeks with a seventh place finish followed by his Earnhardt Ganassi Racing teammate, Juan Pablo Montoya, No. 42 Target Chevrolet in the eighth finishing position. Both made dramatic moves up in the standings with Montoya now in 18th place and McMurray holding the 19th spot.

Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Lowe's/KOBALT Tools Chevrolet, carried the Hendrick Motorsports (HMS) banner with a ninth place finish. The five-time champion is now 17th in the points order. Paul Menard, No. 27 Menards/Moen RCR Chevrolet, moved to 10th in the point standings after a 10th place run in today's 500-lap/256.5-mile race.

With a strong rally back from damage received in an early-race multi-car accident to finish 11th in today's race, Kevin Harvick, No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet, continues to hold second in the standings after the first four races of the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS).

Ryan Newman, No. 39 Qucken Loans Chevrolet fielded by Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) finished 12th today and jumped to 12th in the standings.

Three-time defending NSCS champion Tony Stewart, No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet, was 14th at the checkered flag when late-race contact with another competitor took him out of a top-10 run. The SHR driver remains seventh in the standings.

After running near the front of the field the majority of the race, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., No. 88 National Guard/Diet Mountain Dew Chevrolet, had to settle for the 15th finishing position when a late-race pit road speeding penalty put him deep in the running order. The HMS driver is sixth in the standings as the Series heads west to California next week.

For HMS drivers Kasey Kahne, No. 5 Farmers Insurance Chevrolet, and four-time NSCS champion Jeff Gordon, No. 24 Drive To End Hunger Chevrolet, the fast one-quarter mile race track took its toll. Kahne was caught-up in the same accident as Harvick and finished 37th in the final order. Gordon had a strong car and appeared to be headed for a very strong top-five finish when late race contact sent him to the garage with less than 100 laps remaining. He was scored in 35th place.

Brad Keselowki (Dodge) was the race winner. Matt Kenseth (Ford), Martin Truex, Jr. (Toyota), Clint Bowyer (Toyota) and Brian vickers (Toyota) complete the top-five finishers.

The next stop for the Series will be Auto Club Speedway, Fontana, California on Sunday, March 25, 2012.
