2012 California (Fontana): NASCAR Sprint Cup Starting Line-up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

The NASCAR Sprint Cup series has arrived at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California for round five of the 2012 season.

Auto Club (California) Speedway was built on the grounds of Kaiser Steel mill and opened in 1997. In all, the NASCAR Sprint Cup series has raced at the 2.0-mile D-shaped oval 22 times. The banking in the turns is less than half that of Daytona with 14 degrees in the turns. The front stretch is 11 degrees of banking with a mere three degree slant on the back stretch. To win at California, a driver will have to use the brake and the throttle.

Over the last eleven visits to the track, two drivers have dominated: 5-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, and Matt Kenseth. Johnson has been the man four times in the last eight visits( Fall 2007, Fall 2008, Fall 2009, Spring 2010).

But Kenseth has also won three times (2006, 2007, 2009) in the five year span.

The difference ?

Johnson wins the second visit, while Kenseth wins the first one. But that unique string of events was broken in the Spring of 2010 when Johnson won and made it two consecutive victories.

Four other drivers have won over that 11 races span - since 2006: Kasey Kahne, Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick (defending race winner).

So here is the deal... Johnson is far and away the most solid trend at California, and he's our pick for victory today. Even though he didn't win the last two visits to Fontana, he finished third (Fall, 2010), and second (2011).

But... Keep an eye on Tony Stewart for his consistency, and Kenseth.

So enjoy today's NASCAR Sprint Cup race!
