2012 Kansas: NASCAR Sprint Cup Starting Line-up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

The NASCAR Sprint Cup series makes its first 2012 visit to the 1.5-mile oval at Kansas Speedway. The 'Cup' series has been racing at the 1.5-mile d-shaped oval since 2001, an inaugural event that was won by 4-time champion Jeff Gordon.

The banking is 15 degrees in the turns with 10.4 degrees on the 2,685 foot frontstretch and five degrees on the 2,207 foot backstretch. If all the seats are sold, over 81,000 NASCAR fans will fill the grandstands today.

Over the 13 races run at Kansas, Jeff Gordon, 3-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart, 5-time champion Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle have each won twice. Gordon's first win was mentioned above, with his second coming a year later in 2002. Stewart's victories came in 2006 & 2009. Biffle won is 2007 & 2010 while Johnson won in 2008 and the most recent visit in 2011.

One interesting note is that in ten races, Kansas has twice been won from Pole (Joe Nemechek - 2004, Jimmie Johnson - 2008) and once from a second place (Jeff Gordon - 2001) starting position.

Looking ahead to the checkered flag, the question is who will be first to the finish line.

The likely answer is the two drivers who have dominated at this track: Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson.

Greg Biffle (starting 17th) has six top-three finishes - including two wins - in the last 10 races at Kansas Speedway. His worst finish over that period of time was a 12th in 2006. Plus Biffle is leading the NASCAR Sprint Cup points and is on a roll.

Jimmie Johnson has some pretty good results looking at recent history with a third place run in 2007, wins in 2008 & 2011, a solid ninth place run in 2009, and a second place result in 2010. His lone blemish was a seventh place finish in the Spring race of 2011.

At the end of the day, we are going to call this race for Greg Biffle. He runs well at this track, he's a recent winner at a similar track, and he's got the hot foot right now.

Should Biffle fail to secure the victory, keep an eye on Johnson and on Carl Edwards - who finished second at the most recent visit.

Enjoy today's race! It's sure to be another exciting NASCAR Sprint Cup event.
