2012 Michigan II: NASCAR Sprint Cup Starting Line-Up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

The NASCAR Sprint Cup series has raced 86 times at Michigan International Speedway since their first event in 1969. All-time David Pearson has the most wins with nine - in 29 tries - followed by Cale Yarborough (8 wins/36 races) and Bill Elliott (7 wins/58 races).

Michigan International Speedway was built in 1968 at a distance of 2.0-miles. The D-shaped oval has 18 degree banking in the turns with 12 degree banking on the 3600 foot frontstretch and 5 degree banking on the 2242 foot backstretch. The track surface is new, which has allowed speeds to increase to over 203 mph! When the house is full the grandstands hold a massive 137,243 fans, but the infield has pushed those number over 160,000 in previous years.

Fourth on the overall all-time win list at Michigan is Mark Martin. Martin has 5 wins, 17 top fives, and 30 top tens in 51 races. The ageless wonder added his fifth win back during the June 2009th edition, but in August of 2009 he finished a miserable 31st. In 2012, Martin remains winless so we won't be picking Martin to sneak through for a victory despite starting from Pole.

Four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon has a nearly 50/50 chance of finishing fifth or higher at MIS. In 39 races, he's finished in the top five 18 times. Unfortunately for Gordon, the great finishes haven't resulted in a dominating record of wins, he has just two and his last win came way back in 2001.

Jeff Gordon certainly could win today, but there always seems to be something that allows him to run well, but not finish the deal.

Another man with an outstanding record at Michigan is Roush-keteer Carl Edwards. Edwards has two wins, nine top fives, and 12 top-ten finishes over his career at Michigan. At Michigan, Carl Edwards is simply phenomenal, and far and away has the best results when looking back over the last five years, except his last two visits in which he finished 36th, and 11th.

The Roush Fenway boys and their Fords used to dominate at Michigan, but they haven't won here since 2008. It appears they are the old news.

In June, we picked Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win, and he did. So we are doing it again today.

But if Junior fails to take the trip to Victory Lane, then keep an eye on the Toyotas who have won four of the last six races at Michigan with three different drivers.

So enjoy today's race, it is sure to be another Michigan thriller!
