2012 NHRA: Solid First Day For NTB Big O Tires Driver Johnny Gray At Mac Tools US Nationals

The first day of qualifying for the prestigious Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis concluded with veteran drag racer Johnny Gray paused pleasingly in the No. 2 position after he powered his NTB/Big O Tires Dodge Charger Funny Car to a very solid 4.079 at 310.98 mph.

Gray, of Artesia, N.M., was just a couple of ticks behind his Don Schumacher Racing teammate Jack Beckman, who was the No. 1 qualifier with a 4.05 pass.

"I was pretty sure we were going to run that 4.07," said Gray, who has consistently been a threat this season in his NTB/Big O Tires Dodge and is currently fourth in the Full Throttle Series Funny Car standings.

"The only surprise was that 3.6-seconds into the run, it took the tires off and spun to the finish line," Gray continued, referring to a loss of traction. "It wandered around down there and lost quite a bit of e.t. and speed."

With brewing storms possible in the very near future, the pressure was on for all of the drivers at the esteemed event to put the best run possible in the bank on the first day of qualifying, and every crew chief came out with the intention of making a safe yet solid hit. Gray's team, led by tuner Rob Wendland, was among the successful.

"The beauty of it is that the NTB/Big O Tires Dodge is definitely solidly in the field," said Gray. "No matter what happens weather-wise, our Service Central-backed car is deep in there, and we know we have a good, competitive racecar going into eliminations."

The weekend ahead still holds much excitement, with four qualifying sessions scheduled over the next two days and the Traxxas Nitro Shootout bonus event scheduled for Sunday. Eliminations are slated to take place on Monday.
