2012 NHRA: Solid First Day For NTB Big O Tires Driver Johnny Gray At Mac Tools US Nationals
Pro Stock driver Shane Gray and his Denver, N.C.-based Gray Motorsports team were encouraged by a top-half performance on the first day of the venerable Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, and their ability to guide their NTB/Big O Tires Chevy Camaro to a strong 6.674 at 206.70 mph left them feeling as though they had something worthy to bring to the table.

"We did a lot of testing before this event, and we feel like we learned a few things," said crew chief Justin Elkes. "That was a good run, but the e.t. could have been better. It could have been better for everyone, though [low of the day was a 6.62], so we're pretty happy. We leave here tonight eighth, but seventh was just a thousandth of a second in front of us. That feels pretty good."
There is plenty more racing to come at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis this weekend and even more time to improve, with a pair of qualifying runs scheduled for Saturday and two more on Sunday. Eliminations are slated to take place on Monday.
"I think we made a really good run with our NTB/Big O Tires Chevy Camaro, and there's more left in it," said Gray, who last qualified in the top half at the season-opener in Pomona. "That run felt pretty good; when it made it through low gear, I thought hey, we've got a shot. Hopefully, we'll get a couple more good runs in tomorrow and we'll be able to stay in the top half of the field. We sure like it up here."
