Veach Looking To Backup First Ever Star Mazda Podium Result

Andretti Autosport K12 driver Zach Veach looked at his opportunity to step up to the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in 2011 as graduating from high school and moving up to the college. While the high school senior still has one year left on earning his actual diploma, he’ll make a return to Laguna Seca this weekend where he earned his first career podium result in Star Mazda.

"After Baltimore we learned a lot of things we’d like to try differently,” said Veach. “I got to race a lot of guys and that’s definitely going to help us going into this weekend. Last year, in my second race ever in Star Mazda, we finished third and I think that’s going to give us the momentum we need for a solid weekend in the No. 77 K12 Mazda. It’s a really fun track that I enjoy and I’m excited to be back at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with Andretti Autosport.”

Veach made his first start at Laguna Seca in 2010 in the USF2000 National Championship series where he qualified third and backed it up with a third-place result in the race. The following season while still racing full-time in USF2000, Veach’s Andretti Autosport team awarded him with two starts in the Star Mazda Championship, one of which was Laguna Seca. With little Star Mazda experience under his belt the 17-year-old qualified fourth and finished third.

Several of the most recent Star Mazda races have been on temporary street circuits while Laguna Seca is a permanent road course, which opened in 1957. The track is a 2.238-mile course with a 180 feet elevation change. With 11 turns, including the famous "Corkscrew" at Turn 8, the track is both a challenge and physically demanding for the drivers. With two third-places results and a qualifying effort no worse than fourth at Laguna Seca, Veach is hoping to continue his string of top-10 finishes, which include eight on the season.

Practice for the Monterey, California CONTINENTAL TIRE SPORTS CAR FESTIVAL Powered by MAZDA, event will kick-off with a promoter test day on Sept. 6 with official practice opening on Sept. 7 at 11:35 a.m. EDT. Race #1 is set for Sat., Sept. 8 at 8:20 p.m. EDT followed by Race #2 on Sun., Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. EDT.

Live timing and scoring is available throughout the weekend via http://www.starmazda.com/timing/ or by downloading the Race Monitor app. Further, the race will be prepared for network distribution via tape delay on Discovery’s Velocity Network, Canada’s Rogers SportsNet, and globally on ESPN International. In the U.S., the race will air at 12 Noon, EDT on Sat., Oct. 13. For international dates and times, check local listings.

Veach’s 2012 effort in the Star Mazda Championship is primarily supported by K12 with additional backing provided by: the Young Marines youth organization, Zakosi Data Backup, ADS IT Solutions, Replay XD, OMP, Oakley, and Arai Helmets.

Sanctioned by INDYCAR, the Star Mazda Championship is one of two series part of both the Mazda Road to Indy ladder system and the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver program. Andretti Autosport is currently the only INDYCAR team to compete in each level of the Mazda Road to Indy.
