Bob Raub Reflects On Being Awarded Zimmerman Cup

K-PAX Racing's Bob Raub, crew chief of the Volvo S60s of Randy Pobst and Alex Figge, was awarded the Pirelli World Challenge's prestigious Zimmerman Cup at the Series awards banquet following the final race of the season in Sonoma, California.

The Cup is an annual award presented in the memory of multi-time Championship winning crew chief Jerome Zimmermann (1967-2003) at season’s end to the crew chief that best exemplifies the similar passion, dedication and success Zimmermann had in the Pirelli World Challenge Championships.

For Raub, it was a proverbial rollercoaster season for his K-PAX Racing squad, and with his son winning the Zimmerman Cup in 2003, it makes it a family affair.

"We had a very tough year, starting off with reliability issues that had us changing motor and transmission assemblies twice a weekend," said Raub. "That not only wore us out, but put us in a hole in the points."

During the standing start in Round Six on the streets of Detroit, a driveshaft failure left Randy Pobst’s No. 6 machine stationary in front of a huge Pirelli World Challenge field. To make matters worse, the S60 was collected by two GTS class cars that resulted in significant rear end damage.

A few weeks later, north of the border at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, a fire during Round Eight left Pobst's car burning to the ground during and the team working through the night to prepare the back-up car for next day’s Round 9 race.

"That was almost the last straw blow to the team," Raub continued. "There was no time to recoup until the July break, the fire at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park added another mass of hours to the overtime schedule."

But, the Englewood, Colorado-based team, led by Raub, would come back with a vengeance, literally winning out in August, with Pobst sweeping Mid-Ohio and Figge driving to victory at Sonoma.

"The team took a deep breath re-asserted our commitment to K-PAX and Volvo, worked every day and came back to the last two weeks prepared to win," Raub noted. "Winning the last three races back to back was a much needed confidence booster, I think our competitors will know we will be a team to contend with in 2013."

Added K-PAX Racing Team Owner Jim Haughey: "If you were to describe someone with passion and dedication to the Pirelli World Challenge Championships, it is impossible to overlook Bob Raub. His work ethic, standards and commitment have made us a better racing team and made the Pirelli World Challenge a better place."

Having just finished its 23rd consecutive season, the Pirelli World Challenge series is one of North America's top production car-based racing championships. Divided into four separate categories (Pirelli World Challenge GT, Pirelli World Challenge GTS, Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car and Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car B-Spec), each race features thrilling standing starts, adrenaline filled door-to-door action and world-class drivers. The Pirelli World Challenge features cars from the world's most popular manufacturers – race-prepped versions of the cars driven on the streets. Pirelli World Challenge is sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing, the series races at North America's premier road and temporary street courses.
