Double-Header At Oschersleben: Preview, Facts And Figures For Rounds 8 And 9 Of The Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup

Home round for the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup: Just around 80 kilometres away from the company’s headquarters in Wolfsburg the penultimate race weekend of the year in the world’s most eco-conscious one-make cup will be staged, with two classified races on the agenda. That the event will already produce a decision in the battle for the title is certainly within the realm of possibility. If the Swede Ola Nilsson continues the string of victories he has been scoring in the past five races he will be able to celebrate an early win of the championship after the first of the two heats. The legends Volkswagen Motorsport traditionally invites to the races will make for additional suspense. As well as the former DTM stars Klaus Niedzwiedz and Kurt Thiim the former Formula One racer Pierre-Henri Raphanel, who has been regarded as the world’s fastest driver ever since his speed record of around 431 km/h in the Bugatti Veyron, will take the wheel of the near 285-hp (210 kW) Cup Scirocco powered by bio natural gas at Oschersleben.

News brief on the round at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben

+++ Pierre-Henri Raphanel (51) is official driver of the Bugatti sports car factory and was racing for Lola, Coloni and Rial in Formula One in 1988 and 1989. At the Le Mans 24 Hours, he took second place twice. In 2010, the Frenchman in the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport set a new speed record for road-going production sports cars with an average of 431.072 km/h at the Volkswagen Group’s test track facilities in Ehra-Lessien +++

+++ Klaus Niedzwiedz (61) and Kurt Thiim (54) are meeting for as much as the fourth time in the Legends classification of the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup. The score of the duel between the two former touring car stars is currently 2-1 for Thiim. Niedzwiedz’s track record includes six top podium finishes in DTM races. In addition, he was the runner-up in the 1987 World Touring Car Championship. Thiim won 19 races in the DTM and clinched the DTM title in 1986 +++

+++ Andreas Schweiger (36) is running as a guest entrant at the Motorsport Arena. The native of Karlsruhe lives in Munich where he runs his restaurant, “schweiger2”. In 2009, he was awarded a Michelin Star for his culinary art. He is known to a broad audience from his appearances together with his fellow chefs Frank Oehler and Mike Süsser on the TV reality show “Die Kochprofis – Einsatz am Herd” on RTL II +++

+++ Oschersleben – after Spielberg – is the second venue this season to host two rounds on one race weekend. The grid positions for Sunday’s race result from the order in which the racers finish the first heat. The grid will be reversed for the top eight drivers +++

+++ Ola Nilsson is travelling to Oschersleben as the leader of the standings. The Swede is dominating the Scirocco R-Cup like no other driver before him. Nilsson has won six of the season’s seven races held to date. He is bringing a 132-point advantage over the runner-up in the standings, the Pole Adam Gładysz, to the races at the venue in the Magdeburg flatlands where he may crown himself early as the new Scirocco R-Cup Champion in the first race on Saturday. A maximum of 180 points can still be scored before the first Scirocco race at Oschersleben +++

+++ If Ola Nilsson manages an early win of the Scirocco R-Cup title on Saturday he will have a two-fold reason to rejoice: The Swede is celebrating his 24th birthday on the same day +++

+++ In addition to the entrants of the Pro Cup drivers from the 1988 to 1995 year groups are competing in the Junior Cup classification. The 21-year-old Dane Kasper H. Jensen is leading the standings here with 266 points to his tally. But his immediate rivals, Jonas Giesler (232 points) and Jakub Litwin (222 points), still have chances of taking the Juniors title as well +++

+++ For Junior Cup racer Jan-Frank Kasten, Germany’s northern-most circuit is the home track too. In 2011, the 20-year-old won the ProTalent Competition organised by Volkswagen Coaching and Volkswagen Motorsport. His prize was a season in the Scirocco R-Cup. Kasten is being trained as an industrial mechanic at Volkswagen in Salzgitter +++

+++ Volkswagen one-make cups have been held at the circuit in the Magedeburg flatlands since 1998. The three series, Lupo Cup, Polo Cup and Scirocco R-Cup, have staged 22 races so far on the 3.696-kilometre circuit – more than on any other race track +++

+++ Oschersleben was the first race track to be commissioned in the territory of the “new” German states after Germany’s reunification. The construction project was launched on 8 July 1996. The circuit in which around 58 million were invested was inaugurated a little less than a year later. Most of the Scirocco R-Cup contenders are familiar with the track as this is where Volkswagen Motorsport holds its evaluation and qualification courses for the candidates aspiring to a cockpit in the Cup +++

+++ In 2011, the subsequent Cup winner Mateusz Lisowski from Poland and the Indian Aditya Patel won the two rounds of the Scirocco R-Cup at Oschersleben +++

+++ All Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup races can also be watched via live streaming on the iPhone app or on the internet; optionally with English or German commentaries. The racing action is broadcast on www.volkswagen-motorsport.com/livestream +++

Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup – comments on the race at Oschersleben

Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito: “Every year, the race weekend at Oschersleben is a home round highlight for Volkswagen as the circuit is only 80 kilometres away from Wolfsburg. Leader of the standings Ola Nilsson can secure an early title win after an impressive season. Due to his large points advantage it’ll be difficult for his immediate rivals to intercept him. In the Legends classification, our three contenders are making for additional suspense. The DTM aces Klaus Niedzwiedz and Kurt Thiim are familiar faces in the Scirocco R-Cup. For the former Formula One racer and current Bugatti factory driver Pierre-Henri Raphanel on the other hand, this will be a premiere. I’m eager to see how he’ll be handling the switch from the more than 1,000 hp in the Bugatti to the Race Scirocco.”

Ola Nilsson, Pro Cup driver: “I’m very pleased with the way the season has gone for me so far. Everything has worked out exactly according to my expectations. My aim is to win every race and I managed to do so almost throughout. Oschersleben is one of the more difficult tracks for me and not one of my favourites. In 2011, I finished in fourth place there twice. Even though my birthday is on Saturday – I’ll be concentrating on the race 100 per cent. Obviously, if I should be the first driver to cross the finish line I won’t complain ...”

Kurt Thiim, Legends driver: “Klaus Niedzwiedz and I have fought some fantastic duels in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup and after three runs the score is 2-1 in my favour. I want to extend this advantage even though Oschersleben is not exactly one of my favourite circuits. But everyone has to cope with the local conditions.”

Klaus Niedzwiedz, Legends driver: “I always enjoy running as a guest in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup. Volkswagen is really doing this brilliantly – they offer us motorsport retirees the chance to compete in a classification of our own and guide us through the race weekend by looking after us well with perfect organisational arrangements. This is incredibly good fun. And of course I’ve got some unfinished business with Kurt. To settle this will be my last major motorsport challenge this year.”

Pierre-Henri Raphanel, Legends driver: “I’m excited about my run in the Scirocco R-Cup even though I could tell in my brief preparatory test that I’ll be having difficulties to get everything right on the dot after such a long racing break. And it probably won’t be easy to stand my ground against my Legends competitors either who, after all, are seasoned touring car experts. I’m looking forward to meeting them. We’ll probably have a lot of fun.”
