Playboy MX-5 Cup Practice Sweep Goes To Dean At VIR

When you’re trailing a championship late in the season, the only option a driver has is to maximize every possible point. The best way to do that is to go fast. John Dean, of Sebring, Fla., is doing just that, sweeping Thursday’s SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup practices and extending a streak of sessions led.

Dean’s No. 16 Projections Research/Sick Sideways MX-5 has topped each of the last five series sessions, including a race win and pole at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Round Seven. The current runner-up in the point championship led both of the Thursday morning practices, including a best lap of 2:13.121 (88.430 mph) in the second 30-minute session.

“It’s not too late,” Dean said. “We’re 26 points down. I didn’t realize it’s been that many sessions, but I look on the website and see our car on there a lot, and that’s really cool. We’re just figuring things out. We’re still a lot newer than a lot of these guys are to this car, and we’re starting to figure it out.

“Now we’re really meshing as a team. We’ve got Nathanial Sparks, Christian Szymczak and myself, we proved today that we’re a good team together. To see Sparky as fast as he was, and we’re three in the top four in practice two, was awesome.”

Those two teammates, did, in fact, join Dean in the top four of practice two. Christian Szymczak’s No. 34 Projections Research/Sick Sideways MX-5 posted the second-quickest lap of the day in 2:13.359 (88.273 mph), while Nathanial Sparks’ No. 3 OOTSK Performance/Sick Sideways MX-5 was fourth in the session in 2:13.770 (88.001 mph).

Breaking up the sweep was Ara Malkhassian, who was third in the No. 11 ALARA Racing MX-5. Malkhassian’s fast lap came in 2:13.555 (88.143 mph), leaving him third in the session and third-quickest on the day.

Dean Copeland’s No. 7 Copeland Motorsports/Sync Speed Inc MX-5 was fifth in the second practice in 2:13.947 (87.885 mph).

Championship leader Stevan McAleer was sixth in the second session, but the 2:13.702 (88.046 mph) the No. 28 Blue Mercury Capital/Numerix/CJ Wilson Children’s Charities MX-5 posted in the first session was quick enough to be fourth on the day, just ahead of Sparks.

Charles Paquin, who crashed his No. 27 CJ Wilson Mazda/New Balance/Phiten MX-5 in the opening session just a couple of hours earlier in the morning, was back on track after the CJ Wilson Racing team scrambled to repair his car.

Bryan Hixon led the Skip Barber Racing School MAZDASPEED Pro Series class with a lap of 2:18.115 (85.223 mph) in the No. 63 HixonRacing.myvi.net/Skip Barber Racing MX-5 to sweep both sessions.
