2012 Chicagoland: NASCAR Sprint Cup Starting Line-up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

The Chase is on! The NASCAR Sprint Cup series will be racing today at Chicagoland Speedway for the 11th time. The track is a 1.5-mile D-shaped oval with 18 degree banking in the turns. The frontstretch is 2400 feet with an 11 degree banking, while the backstretch is 1700 feet with a relatively flat five degrees of banking. If all the seats are full, 75,000 NASCAR fans will be enjoying the show.

The first event at the oval was back in 2001 and was won by Kevin Harvick. In fact, Kevin Harvick won the 2002 trip as well. In 11 trips to Chicago, Harvick has seven top-tens. Not bad.. eh ?

His story gets even better....

Not only has Harvick finished well during the early days of the track, but he has four top-five finishes out of the last six races. But his blemishes include a 19th place run in 2009, and a 34th place finish in 2010.

This track suits Kevin Harvick.

But not as well as it suites two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart.

Tony Stewart is the only driver with three wins in Chicago (including 2011), and Stewart goes one better with eight top five finishes in 11 tries. His only poor result was when he crashed with 10 laps to go in 2001 (finished 33rd), and a 32nd place finish in 2006. If Stewart is running at the end, he's been competing for the win. He'll start 29th today.

There are two other drivers who have had significant success at Chicago... Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. Gordon has six top-five finishes in 11 races, while Johnson has five top-five finishes in 10 events.

While 'Chase' time is Johnson-time, Johnson has never won at Chicagoland.

And while we are at it... The winner at Chicago has only once won from Pole in 11 events. Even more interesting, the winner has started sixth or worse 11 out of 12 times, and 10th or worse eight out of 11 events. A fast qualifying means nothing at Chicago.

So today's pick is....

Tony Stewart

If Stewart should fail to produce keep an eye on Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. They are all very likely going to end up in the top-five.

So enjoy today's race, its sure to be another exciting NASCAR event!
