NASCAR Number: 9 (Sept. 18, 2012)
By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service
9: The number of drivers in the top nine in the July 15 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway who went on to qualify for the Chase. That’s right, all nine. And that’s one reason why Sunday’s SYLVANIA 300 at Loudon promises to be a shootout among drivers eligible for the Cup championship. In fact, current Chase drivers took 12 of the top 13 positions in the July race, won by Kasey Kahne, with Ryan Newman in 10th as the only interloper. The bottom line is that a top-10 finish doesn’t guarantee that a driver will gain ground on many of his Chase rivals.
