Auto Club Speedway To Again Host Izod IndyCar Series Season Finale In 2013

For a second straight year, the IZOD IndyCar Series champion will be crowned at Auto Club Speedway as officials announced that Southern California’s premier motorsports facility will host the Series’ finale in 2013 at the MAVTV 500 on Oct. 19. Also on the Speedway’s 2013 schedule, NASCAR’s Auto Club 400 Weekend is set for March 22-24.

Nineteen races over 16 event weekends highlight the 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series schedule which includes the return of INDYCAR racing to Pocono Raceway and the streets of Houston.

With a 400-mile race at Pocono Raceway joining the 500-mile events at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Auto Club Speedway on the schedule, the IZOD IndyCar Series will institute a Triple Crown award, which will pay a $1 million bonus to the driver that wins on all three ovals. A driver that wins two of the three races will be awarded a $250,000 bonus.

Also new for 2013 are Saturday-Sunday doubleheaders scheduled for the street courses at Detroit's Belle Isle Park, Toronto and Houston and the implementation of standing starts at those three venues.

If the 2012 INDYCAR event at Auto Club Speedway, which saw 12 different leaders in the race, 29 lead changes and seven different teams represented in the top 10 positions, is any indication of what 2013 holds, fans are in for quite a show.

Ryan Hunter-Reay, who couldn’t even find a ride five years ago, finished fourth and claimed the IZOD IndyCar Series title in this year’s finale by just three points over Will Power – the closest margin since 2006. He moved up 18 positions from the start of the race en route to his championship while Ed Carpenter won the MAVTV 500, becoming the first owner-driver to win a race since 2004.

When NASCAR rolls into town in March, Tony Stewart will look to defend his Auto Club 400 title, while Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. will try to better their second and third place finishes respectively as the new models – Chevrolet’s SS, Ford’s Fusion and Toyota’s Camry – will make their official entrance into NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Said Stewart following last year’s victory: ''It's been nice to get off to a good start this year the way we have. The history shows the last 13 years, we haven't had the strongest start the first third of the year, but I'm really excited about the start we've got going.

With his fourth place finish in the MAVTV 500, Hunter-Reay took the title, piloting the No. 28 Team DHL/Sun Drop Citrus Soda Andretti Autosport Chevrolet into Victory Lane and ending the season with six podium and nine top-10 finishes that included a Series’-high four wins in the 15-race schedule.

In the MAVTV 500, Carpenter started his No. 20 Fuzzy’s Premium Ultra Vodka Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet fifth in the 26-car field, and worked his way to the lead on lap 66 of the 250-lap/500-mile race. He was credited with leading eight times for a race-high total of 62 laps. Quite the feat considering he entered the race having led 63 in his entire INDYCAR career. But it was Carpenter’s last-lap pass of former Series’ champion Dario Franchitti that secured the win and put him in Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka 19th Hole Victory Lane.
