Gray Gaulding No 2 Krispy Kreme Toyota All American 400 Pre-Race Report

While in its 108th year of operation, the Fairgrounds Speedway, conveniently located at the site of the Tennessee state fair, has held the “Super Bowl of Short Track Racing” starting in 1981, making Saturday’s event the 28th all time. But the All American 400 isn’t the only major accomplishment held by the .596-mile short-track. Since converting from a dirt horse track to a paved oval in 1958, the Fairgrounds Speedway has seen some of the most competitive races by racing stars from every generation. Having run NASCAR’s top-three Series, the likes of the Alabama Gang (Bobby Allison, Donnie Allison and Red Farmer), Coo Coo Marlin, Darrell Waltrip, Sterling Marlin, Bill Elliott, Dale Earnhardt and Bobby Hamilton have all battled at the historic facility.

With all of the prestige and notoriety surrounding the 400-lap event, many find the weekend to be daunting. But none of that seems to faze 14-year-old Gray Gaulding as he prepares his No. 2 Krispy Kreme Toyota for the grueling demands that will be seen. Not only will the event mark his first start in the All American 400, it will also be the longest race the Statesville, N.C. native has been a part of. To date, Gaulding’s longest race was the 300-lap Pro All Star Series (PASS) event at the historical North Wilkesboro Speedway in April of 2011.

“I am looking forward to heading to Fairgrounds Speedway at Nashville and Gray having his first chance to run a 400-lap race,” said Coulter Motorsports crew chief Randy Renfrow. “Our car has been good all year and I know we have a good chance at a big win this Saturday in the All American 400. I want to thank Krispy Kreme, Toyota, Coulter Motorsports and everyone that has made this year possible and a success.”

In keeping with the Krispy Kreme mission statement “to touch and enhance lives through the joy that is Krispy Kreme,” Gaulding will help spread the excitement of the event by holding a meet and greet for local fans on Thursday, October 4th with his No. 2 Krispy Kreme, Coulter Motorsports Toyota show car. He will first visit 408 Thompson Lane in Nashville, Tenn. at 5 pm before heading to 1733 Mallory Lane in Brentwood, Tenn. at 7:30 pm (All times Central.)

“I have always heard about the All American 400 and the Fairgrounds Speedway at Nashville but couldn’t grasp all the history until I made a trip there in August,” said an excited Gaulding. “I could not be more excited heading into the All American weekend as the Fairgrounds seems like my kind of track. I have been talking with crew chief Randy (Renfrow) about it all year and I can't wait to hit the track. It reminds me a lot of Southern National (Motorsports Park) and we have had a lot of success there this year. I know my Coulter Motorsports crew has prepared me another fast Krispy Kreme Toyota and I can not wait to hit the track for the first time.”
