2012 NHRA: DSR Reading NHRA Friday Qualifying Results

Beckman's time of 3.989 seconds at 320.58 mph set both ends of the track record and the time earned three qualifying bonus points to pull him closer to points leader and Don Schumacher Racing teammate Ron Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge. Capps leads by 27 points heading to Saturday in the fourth of six events in the NHRA Countdown to the Championship in the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

Beckman, Capps and teammate Matt Hagan are the only drivers who have run quicker than 4 seconds in NHRA history. Hagan holds the No. 7 spot at Reading while Capps was unable to complete either of his two passes under power and is not qualified, ranking 18th out of 18 entries.

In Top Fuel Dragster, Spencer Massey and the Prestone/FRAM team picked up 2 bonus points in qualifying by running the session's second best time of 3.763 (321.12) to gain on teammate and points leader Antron Brown, whose Matco Tools "Tools for the Cause" dragster is in the provisional No. 11 position.

Massey with crew chiefs Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler started Friday ranked second and 21 points behind Brown. Massey trimmed Brown's lead to 18 points.

The top three driver's elapsed times earn bonus points in each of the four scheduled qualifying sessions with the quickest earning 3, next best 2 and third best 1.

Drivers tend to call them "little points" but acknowledge in the Countdown to the Championship there are no little points.

On Sunday during eliminations, each round win is worth 20.

After the field is set for the top-16 advancing to Sunday, additional points are awarded by where drivers qualify: first gets 8 points, second gets 7, third gets 6, fourth gets 5, fifth and sixth each get 4, seventh and eighth each get 3, ninth through 12th each get 2 and 13th through 16th each get 1.

All drivers entered in the event that make at least one qualifying run earn 10 points.

An NHRA elapsed time national record is worth 20 more points.

The foliage on thousands of mature trees on hillsides surrounding Maple Grove Raceway has begun to transform into a fall splendor, and Don Schumacher Racing is adding to the colorful landscape of the NHRA Nationals this weekend near Reading, Pa.

Komen Fight for the Cure battle against breast cancer. The team will carry the pink theme, which includes Brown's firesuit and helmet along with pink team crew shirts, though the next two events including the finale at Pomona, Calif.
