Pacific F2000 As Series Concludes Ninth Season At Las Vegas Motor Speedway

The Pacific F2000/Formula F Super Series Championship Presented by Corsa Car Care heads to Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend, October 6th and 7th for rounds 11 and 12. The series joins the Vintage Auto Racing Association for its Datsun-Porsche Shootout race weekend. The weather is forecast to be sunny and in the high eighties as the drivers set themselves to challenge the tight, ten turn, 1.940 mile circuit.

Rookie Bobby Kelley, the Champion elect, is again driving the #21 A&B Equipment, Van Diemen for Dave Freitas Racing looks forward to finishing the season off on a high with a couple of victories here. Kelley clinched the series title in round 10 with his series high fifth victory and has not finished lower than second all season.

Kelley’s efforts this weekend are not going to go unchallenged as a pair of series veterans, who are running limited schedules this season are back to stake their claim to the top step of the podium. The first of these is Ira Fierberg, the defending Expert Class (drivers 35-50) champion in the #27, Sparco USA, Pinnacle Performance, LDF, Dave Freitas Racing Van Diemen. Fierberg swept the weekend at Fontana, claiming pole position, fastest lap and victory in both races that weekend. The second is David Cheng, coming off his first season in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, where the high point of his season was marked by a victory at Road America. Cheng, driving the #4, CJ Wilson Children’s Charities, PR1 Motorsports Van Diemen, finished second in round five and claimed victory in round six when the series made its first stop at Buttonwillow Raceway.

Camren Kaminsky in the #34 PR1 Motorsports Van Diemen is second in the standings, the third rookie in the series, and is looking to add a victory to his four podium finishes with a strong run this weekend.

Master Class (drivers 51 and up) point leader and series promoter Les Phillips driving his #2 Swiss Implants, Porterfield Brakes Van Diemen is fourth in the overall standings just nine points behind Kaminsky and has finished in the top five in nine of the ten races and looks forward to claiming the Master Class Championship.

Peter West in the #99, Frank Monise Motors, T.J. Martell Foundation Van Diemen and Peter Hastrup, who returned this season at the last event at Buttonwillow Raceway after a brief hiatus, will be driving the #6, Western Building Materials Van Diemen. Both are campaigning for Dave Freitas Racing.

Leading the way with eight victories in ten races in the Formula F group is 2011 F2000 series champion Conner Ford, who has clinched the Formula F Series Title, running a Mygale/Honda in the Formula F class for PR1 Motorsports and sponsored by The Keniston's, JF Excavating & Grading, Western Nevada Supply and Sparco USA. Ford is a recent finalist in the prestigious Team USA Scholarship program whose recent alumni include current Indycar drivers Charlie Kimball, Josef Newgarden and J.R. Hildebrand along with Rolex series driver Dane Cameron.

Tristan Nunez will be driving a second Mygale/Honda for PR1 Motorsports which rounds out its entry supporting Dan Gulickson in the #17 Piper/Honda. Nunez has been competing in the Cooper Tires Prototypes Lites series this season and has taken victory in 10 of the 12 races held thus far this season and has all but clinched that series title with two races remaining.

In its second year is the Formula F Super Series which is made up of current model Formula F (formerly Formula Ford) cars with either the 1600cc Ford ‘Kent’ engine or the newly added 1500cc Honda ‘Fit ‘ engine. Chassis include Swift, Van Diemen and Mygale.

The series format provides several races within the race as competitors battle for top honors in Expert (drivers 35-50), Master (drivers 51 and up) and Formula F classes as well as for overall victories.

The single-seat, open-wheel F2000 cars with their 140+ horsepower Ford Zetec engines are capable of speeds in excess of 140 mph. All cars run on Cooper Tires supplied by Sierra Tire with a single set used for the entire weekend adding the element of tire management to the race strategy. VP Racing fuels also is an official provider, along with Corsa Car Care, Porterfield Brakes, Wine Country Motorsports Aerocraft Fiberglass & Design, Williams Racing Developments and Buttonwillow Raceway.
