2012 Talladega II: NASCAR Sprint Cup Starting Line-Up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

Today's NASCAR Sprint Cup Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500 at Talladega Superspeedway will be the 87th time that the series has raced at the 2.66-mile track. NASCAR has been coming to Talladega, Alabama since 1969. The first race was won by Richard Brickhouse in a '69 Dodge. Interestingly, the Pole speed for that first race was 196.386 mph while today's Pole sitter Jeff Gordon turned in a lap of 191.623 mph.

Talladega is a massive tri-oval which has banking of 33 degrees in the turns. The 4,300 foot frontstretch is 16.5 degrees while the 4000 foot backstretch is a mere two degrees. The grandstands will hold 143,231 NASCAR fans.

It used to be easy to pick a winner at Talladega, just pick the manufacturer Chevrolet, and one of the Earnhardts. But times have been a changin'. At least for the Earnhardt name.

The last ten races at Talladega have been won by eight different drivers (Jeff Gordon - Fall '07, Kyle Busch - Spring '08, Tony Stewart - Summer '08, Brad Keselowski - Spring '09 & Spring '12, Jamie McMurray - Fall '09, Kevin Harvick - Spring '10, Clint Bowyer - Fall '10 & Fall '11, Jimmie Johnson - Spring '11).

During that span Chevrolet has returned to the top of the manufacturers while all four manufacturers have won during those 10 races (Chevrolet - six times, Toyota - twice, Ford, Dodge).

All that being said, Talladega is highly unpredictable, and a total crap-shoot.

The official PaddockTalk pick to win the Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500 at Talladega is... Brad Keselowski, who has had the hot foot lately, and won the Spring event. If he succeeds, he will be the first driver since Jeff Gordon to sweep the season since 2007.

Should Keselowski fail, keep an eye on traditional restrictor plate specialists Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. They are always a threat for victory at Talladega.

As for the rest of the field, keep an eye on everyone! Because after the big one, it could be just about anyone's race.

Enjoy!
