NASCAR Number: 50, 25 (Oct. 12, 2012)
By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service
Today’s NASCAR Number is this week’s daily double:
50: The car count for the first fall race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. On Oct. 16, 1960, 50 cars took the green flag in the second race run at the 1.5-mile track in NASCAR’s premier series (now called Sprint Cup). That’s the third highest car count in Speedway history. All told, a track-record 60 cars raced in the first World 600 in June 1960. The fall race that year was run at 400 miles, not 500 as is the case today.
25: The number of cars running at the finish of the first National 400, won by Speedy Thompson. Half the field fell out with an assortment of mechanical ills and crashes, and Thompson, in fact, was the only driver to complete all 267 laps. Runner-up Richard Petty and third-place Ned Jarrett were the only drivers one lap down.
