Ten Crucial Facts: Armor All Gold Coast 600

Point of Interest: This year is the third time international co-drivers have joined the stars of V8 Supercar racing for the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 and the 11th time the Gold Coast event has counted as a part of the V8 Supercars Championship.

Circuit Length: 2.984-kilometres Circuit Direction: Anti-Clockwise 2011 Crowd: 181,486 (3 days)

Circuit Description: The Gold Coast street circuit is a high speed, concrete-lined, thrill ride that was shortened in 2010 by around 1.5-kilometres compared to the old 'Indy' layout. The temporary street track has proven to create carnage in the past, particularly when drivers don't show the patience required for victory, so the guest international drivers at this year's event will have to tread carefully.

10 FAST FACTS

1. Victory in the recent Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 has extended TeamVodafone's race winning streak to 10. The victory by Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell is the latest in the best winning streak seen in the championship since 13 straight race wins were achieved by the Holden Racing Team's Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes in late 1998/early 1999. The team are also well positioned for the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 given they have the two winning international co-drivers from 2011 - Sebastien Bourdais and Richard Lyons - joining them for this years' event.

2. The Dan Wheldon Memorial Trophy will again be awarded to the best-finishing international co-driver in the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600. Named in honour of the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner killed in an accident in Las Vegas in October last year - just a week before he was due to join the Holden Racing Team on the Gold Coast - the trophy was won last year by TeamVodafone's Sebastien Bourdais, left. The team also had the best-finishing international driver in the inaugural year of the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 in 2010 - Brit Andy Priaulx.

3. Of the 28 international co-drivers signed for the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600, 13 are returning having competed in the event in 2010, 2011 or both. 14 drivers are making their V8 Supercars Championship debut on the Gold Coast, while one driver - Frenchman Nicolas Minassian - is returning after a nine-year absence since he drove at Sandown and Bathurst in 2003 with Team Dynamik.

The drivers making their V8 Supercars Championship debuts at the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 are:

Marco Andretti (Jack Daniel's Racing)
Jeroen Bleekemolen (SP Tools Racing)
Franck Montagny (Fair Dinkum Sheds Racing)
Justin Wilson (Pepsi Max Crew)
Max Papis (Jim Beam Racing)
Peter Kox (Team Norton DJR)
Jamie Campbell-Walter (Wilson Security Racing)
Mike Conway (Team iSelect)
Ricky Taylor (Fujitsu Racing/GRM)
James Hinchcliffe (Fujitsu Racing/GRM)
Graham Rahal (Jack Daniel's Racing)
Nick Heidfeld (The Bottle-O Racing Team)
Peter Dumbreck (Supercheap Auto Racing)
Lucas di Grassi (Tekno Autosports)

4. There are also three primary V8 Supercars Championship drivers making their first V8 appearance on the Gold Coast. Wilson Security Racing's David Wall, right, Jack Daniel's Racing's Tim Blanchard and Team iSelect's Taz Douglas are having their first experience of a V8 Supercar on the Queensland street circuit. Wall has previous experience in Porsche Carrera Cup, competing in three rounds on the Gold Coast from 2006 to 2008, finishing runner-up in '08 to James Moffat.

5. A total of 12 different countries will be represented across the 28 international co-drivers at the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600. France have the most representatives among the international co-drivers with five drivers in the field.

France (5) - Sebastien Bourdais, Simon Pagenaud, Stephane Sarrazin, Franck Montagny, Nicolas Minassian
United States (4) - Marco Andretti, Ricky Taylor, Boris Said, Graham Rahal
Australia (3) - Ryan Briscoe (left), Will Power, David Brabham
Italy (3) - Vitantonio Liuzzi, Gianni Morbidelli, Max Papis
England (3) - Justin Wilson, Darren Turner, Mike Conway
Netherlands (2) - Jeroen Bleekemolen, Peter Kox
Scotland (2) - Jamie Campbell-Walter, Peter Dumbreck
Germany (2) - Marc Lieb, Nick Heidfeld
Finland (1) - Mika Salo
Canada (1) - James Hinchcliffe
Brazil (1) - Lucas di Grassi
Northern Ireland (1) - Richard Lyons

With a range of full-time V8 Supercar drivers hailing from New Zealand, the overall number of countries represented at the 2012 ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 is 13.

6. Jack Daniel's Racing's Rick Kelly will chalk up his 150th ATCC/V8 Supercars Championship event start on the Gold Coast - while brother Todd will miss his first V8SC event since 2000. Two-time Bathurst winner Rick becomes just the 18th driver in ATCC/V8SC history to reach the '150' milestone - he and brother Todd also become the first pair of brothers in the '150' club. Rick's last race win came at Sandown in November 2011 with his best finish this year a fifth place in the Saturday race in Hamilton, New Zealand. He will be joined by IndyCar ace Graham Rahal this weekend, who competed on the Gold Coast in the Champ Car race in 2007 and in IndyCar in 2008. Meanwhile, shoulder surgery has sidelined Rick's brother Todd, who will miss his first V8 Supercars Championship event since Sandown 2000 and hand over the #7 Commodore to replacement Tim Blanchard. It will signal the end of Kelly's streak of 160 consecutive ATCC/V8SC event starts.

7. A total of 11 ex-Formula 1 drivers are on the grid for the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 with a combined 538 Grands Prix starts between them. The most experienced is German Nick Heidfeld, right, who will drive the #55 The Bottle-O Falcon with David Reynolds. Heidfeld made 183 F1 GP starts in a career spanning 12 years and also has the unenviable record of the most podiums - 13 - by a driver in World Championship history without a victory. The other ex-F1 drivers (in order of starts made) are: Mika Salo (109), Vitantonio Liuzzi (80), Gianni Morbidelli (67), Sebastien Bourdais (27), David Brabham (24), Lucas di Grassi (18), Justin Wilson (16), Franck Montagny (7), Max Papis (6) and Stephane Sarrazin (1).

8. Ten drivers in the 2012 ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 have competed in the old Gold Coast Indy 300 event. There are two former winners in Sebastien Bourdais (2005/2007) and Ryan Briscoe (2008), as well as a three-time pole-sitter in Will Power (2006-2008), left, and former runners-up in Max Papis (1999) and Justin Wilson (2007). The other drivers with CART/Champ Car/IndyCar experience at Surfers Paradise are Marco Andretti, Simon Pagenaud, Mika Salo, Graham Rahal and Team BOC's Jason Bright, who drove for Della Penna Motorsports in the 2000 race.

9. The Gold Coast circuit is world-famous venue alongside other street circuits such as Macau, Long Beach and Monaco. There are an impressive four former Macau Grand Prix winners in the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 field: David Brabham (1989), Peter Dumbreck (1998), Lucas di Grassi (2005) and Mike Conway (2006), right. Conway has the added honour of also being a Long Beach IndyCar winner (2011) as well as a winner at Monaco, where he won in GP2 in 2008. Sebastien Bourdais is also a winner at Long Beach (2005 & 2007) and Monaco (2002 in Formula 3000), while Will Power won at Long Beach in 2008 and this year.

10. Triple Eight Race Engineering, Ford Performance Racing and Walkinshaw Racing have dominated the Gold Coast event in recent years. The three organisations have won the last 17 V8 Supercar races straight on the Gold Coast in a streak dating back to Craig Lowndes' victory for Triple Eight in Race 2 in 2005. Both Triple Eight and Walkinshaw Racing - between both the Holden Racing Team and HSV Dealer Team squads it provided technology to - have claimed seven wins each with FPR taking three, the most recent on Sunday last year with Mark Winterbottom and Richard Lyons.
