2012 Kansas II: Marcos Ambrose NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Recap

Marcos Ambrose survived a wild NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway today, recording a 12th place finish for new sponsor Black & Decker.

Running strongly within the top-ten, Ambrose was involved in a mid-race accident, and fell back to 30th position.

After diligent work in the pits, Ambrose rallied in the late stages aboard his Ford, claiming the best finishing position for the team in seven races. The result elevates Ambrose to 17th in the point standings.

"I feel really good for my team," Ambrose said.

"We have been through a lot the last five weeks. There is a ray of sunshine shining on us now.

"We didn't get the finish we wanted. After the crash, the car was tore up and we fell back, but we still finished 12th.

"The team did a great job to get us back on the track and make us competitive. Mike Ford made some great calls on the box, and we just have to keep going here and build for 2013."

Starting from 18th, Ambrose held station in the opening stint, until Casey Mears brought out the first caution on lap 31 of 267 after hitting the wall.

After a Kyle Busch spin slowed the field for a second time, Ambrose restarted from 23rd, with the yellow flag waving shortly afterwards when AJ Allmendinger crashed out.

Ambrose put his elbows out on the restart, fighting his way back through to 18th place.

Jeff Burton brought out the next caution, with Ambrose continuing his forward progress from the drop of the green flag, moving from 17th position up into 13th.

The caution lights flashed once more when Aric Almirola slapped the fence on lap 123, and following a swift service by the Richard Petty Motorsports crew, Ambrose returned to action in eighth place.

Jimmie Johnson was the next to spin, with the number nine Ford staying out under the caution, saving fuel.

After another yellow for a wreck involving Bobby Labonte, Ambrose aced the restart to be placed in sixth after 154 circuits.

Danica Patrick then tangled with Landon Cassill, with Ambrose following the leaders into the pits for a service, with a delayed fuel fill dropping the car down the order.

In 18th place on the restart, Ambrose was caught out as the field bunched at turn three, spinning backwards into the wall with Trevor Bayne.

Multiple pit stops under this caution and a subsequent yellow for Greg Biffle, saw Ambrose return to the track with a patched up car in 30th position, one lap down on the leaders.

When Kyle Busch and Ryan Newman made contact, Ambrose found himself in position to take the Lucky Dog free pass back onto the lead lap.

Ambrose then advanced to 20th position when Almirola hit the wall for a second time, which became 14th when Sam Hornish Jnr came unstuck with 33 laps remaining.

In the run to the chequered flag, Ambrose further advanced to 12th position, with the race won by fellow Ford driver Matt Kenseth.

Next week the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns to short track racing, with the 33rd event of the season from Martinsville Speedway.
