In fact, those two drivers, points leader Brad Keselowski’s closest pursuers in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, combined to win nine straight Martinsville races from 2006-2010. Johnson, second in the standings and seven points behind Keselowski, has a career-average finish of 5.8 at the .526-mile short track. Hamlin, third in points and 20 behind the driver of the Blue Deuce, has posted an average finish of 6.4 at Martinsville. In five Martinsville starts, Keselowski’s average finish is 13.4, with a best result of ninth in April of this year. Hence, conventional wisdom seems to indicate that the seventh race of the Chase provides an opportunity for Johnson and Hamlin to make up ground.
