2012 NHRA: Bernstein Ready To Extend Semifinals Streak At Las Vegas

Brandon Bernstein's semifinals streak in the ProtectTheHarvest.com/MAVTV Top Fuel dragster nearly ended the night before Sunday's eliminations were scheduled to begin.

The ProtectTheHarvest.com rail struggled during qualifying on Friday and Saturday and went into the final qualifying round in the No. 15 spot and in danger of getting bumped from the field.

"It's not a good feeling at all," Bernstein said. "It's one of those deal where your gut is kind of turning and you are so nervous because you want to make sure you get everything so perfect, so you do get the best run that you can."

All that nervous energy and attention to detail paid off as Bernstein ran a 3.869-second pass at 320.43 mph to qualify solidly in the No. 12 spot.

"Today the car looked more like the one that's been consistent the last four or five races," Bernstein said. "(Crew chief) Joe Barlam and the guys did a great job of overcoming adversity, because Friday wasn't too good for us.

"Everything turned around for us Saturday. We were just a little bit off in that first run or we would have pulled all the way through. The second session was great, we ran a 3.86."

He pairs up against No. 5 qualifier J.R. Todd, who had a best lap of 3.806 seconds at 324.05 mph.
During Bernstein's streak of reaching the semifinals in four straight races, the ProtectTheHarvest.com dragster has started from the lower half of the field twice.

"We've been in the bottom half of the field and come through with a good finish quite a bit this year," Bernstein said. "I'm excited about tomorrow because we have a car that has shown it can run with anybody. Those people higher in the field who we are going to run, they know we are tough to beat.

"It gives them the opportunity to make a mistake that we can capitalize on."

Eliminations at the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals get under way at 11 a.m. PDT from The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
