DMACK Doubles Up For World Rally Season Finale

DMACK will field its strongest ever line-up next week when Evgeny Novikov and Martin Prokop take on the final round of the 2012 FIA World Rally Championship in a pair of DMACK-branded Ford Fiesta RS world rally cars.

Rally de Espana will also see DMACK’s asphalt rally tyre being used on a world rally car for the very first time in what will be one of the most complex events this year.

The Spanish round of the world championship is the only true mixed surface event in the calendar. Competitors will race on gravel for day one before teams face a race against time to turn the cars into asphalt specification for days two and three.

That format means DMACK will transport four different tyres to the event. On the qualifying stage and Friday’s opening day gravel stages, Novikov and Prokop will be allowed to use a maximum of 15 DMG+2 gravel tyres from an allocation of 14 hard H1 compound and eight soft S1 tyres.

For the asphalt stages, they are permitted to use up to 20 tyres from a pool of 18 hard and 16 soft compound DMT-RC asphalt tyres.

The mixture of road and weather conditions could play a big part in the event. Friday’s gravel stages are expected to be quite rough but cool or even wet weather will dictate the choice of tyre compound. Similarly, the normally smooth, circuit-like asphalt roads could throw up an even greater challenge to teams if the weather changes.

Czech driver Prokop is no stranger to DMACK. He set top-10 stage times on DMACK’s very first event at Rally Sweden in 2011 and finished eighth overall at Rally Sardinia two weeks ago. But his fondest memory will be from Rally Argentina this year when he scored his and DMACK’s top WRC result of fourth overall.

Novikov, however, hasn’t competed with DMACK on a world rally before but his experience will help the firm evaluate and develop its products even further ahead of next year’s campaign.

Both drivers will complete pre-event preparation with a test on Monday and Autotek will run both cars on the event.

Event Details
The compact event is based around the holiday destination of Salou on the Costa Daurada but Barcelona hosts the ceremonial start on Thursday evening. The real action starts on Friday with a loop of three predominantly gravel stages around Gandesa. The 44km Terra Alta test, stages three and five, contains both gravel and asphalt sections and will deliver and even greater challenge to crews.

Saturday and Sunday each host a repeated three-stage loop of asphalt tests including the mammoth 45.97km El Priorat stage on Saturday and the 26.5km Santa Marina power stage on Sunday.

Dick Cormack, DMACK motorsport director, said: “We’ve decided to use the last event of the season to evaluate and determine the performance of our tyres and we’re looking forward to some useful feedback from both drivers. It’s important for us to continue moving forward and improving our products for next year, and we have a test planned after the event to try three different gravel tyre constructions ahead of next season.”
