2012 NHRA: Another Respectable Run For Johnny Gray In The Big O Tires Dodge In Pomona

Funny Car driver Johnny Gray made another efficient run down the racetrack at historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona on day two of the Auto Club NHRA Finals to maintain his berth in the top half of the field.

The driver of the Service Central Racing Big O Tires Dodge Charger improved upon the 4.065, 312.57 mph recorded in the first session of the event and put a 4.060, 313.22 on record to provisionally earn the No. 5 position.

"We've got a pair of consistent runs on the page, and we'll be looking for two more tomorrow with our Service Central Big O Tires car," said Gray. "Of course we have our eyes on those bonus qualifying points up for grabs, and we missed adding a few more today, but tomorrow we have a couple more to get after it. The main thing is that we want to go down the racetrack every qualifying pass so that we're prepared for the fight to finish the year in fourth place Sunday. That's about the best we can do, so that's what we're after."

The team that has twice this year qualified in the No. 1 position (Phoenix and Norwalk) knows what they are capable of, and the NHRA Finals will be the last opportunity of the season to shine before the winter break – and the long wait until the season-opener in February – begins.

"I'm a little disappointed," admitted crew chief Rob Wendland, who envisioned a run that could rival what the team produced in the final qualifying pass at the NHRA event in Reading several weeks ago, a 4.02 at nearly 319 mph.

"But we want to make four good passes to get this Service Central Big O Tires car ready for raceday," he continued. "And we went out there and made a good run. We did what we needed to do. Tomorrow it will probably be a warmer track – maybe a car or two will pick up – but I think we're in a really good position to get a great raceday setup."

Qualifying for the Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona will continue on Saturday with two sessions scheduled (noon and 3 p.m.) before final eliminations on Sunday at 11 a.m.
