Al Carter Doubles Up In Pirelli Cayman Interseries Wins Saturday At The Daytona Continental Historics As Mark Sandridge Takes 2012 Championship

Al Carter and Chris Smith Racing doubled up on Pirelli Cayman Interseries Endurance Cup Championship race wins Saturday at Daytona International Speedway while a second-place class finish in this afternoon’s 75-minute enduro was enough for Mark Sandridge to clinch the 2012 Pirelli Cayman Interseries Pro Division Championship.

As he did in this morning’s eight lap sprint race, Carter took the lead at the drop of the green flag in the afternoon enduro and never looked back. He led all 34 laps of the time raced and crossed the finish line with a comfortable one lap lead over the field. His pair of Saturday victories in the No. 59 Chris Smith Racing Porsche Cayman S came in his first career race starts in the Pirelli Cayman Interseries.

“This is my first HSR event and we just had a lot of fun out there, a lot of close competition,” Carter said. “There is a big difference between all of the classes of cars but everybody is incredibly respectful. It just turned out to be a great race and I want to thank everybody at Chris Smith Racing for giving me a great car here this weekend.”

Sandridge never challenged for the victory but only needed to finish the enduro to clinch his first Pirelli Cayman Interseries Championship. He finished fourth overall and second to Carter in the Pro division in his white and red-and-yellow striped No. 49 Cayman S modeled after his 1994 IMSA Champion Team Salad Porsche 911 RSR.

“Consistency is the name of this game in racing and I think we accomplished that as a team this year,” said Sandridge, who will share his title with coach and co-driver Joe Varde. “We also had a good time, and it really is about having good times with people you want to be around, and that is what this series is all about. We have a good group of guys that just want to go out and race, respect each other, but race hard and clean and just have a good time.”

Tom Bloom continued his recent Pirelli Cayman Interseries hot streak to finish second overall in the enduro and first in the Sportsman class for the second time on Saturday. Like Carter in the Pro division, Bloom swept both of today’s Sportsman races in his black and red No. 16 Cayman S.

Third overall in the enduro, and second in Sportsman, went to Daytona debuting driver Eduardo de Souza Ramos and his co-driver Leandro de Almeida in their white and red No. 5 Cayman S themed after a European long-tail 1969 Porsche 908. The podium appearance was the second of the day for Ramos who also earned Sportsman runner-up honors behind Bloom in the morning sprint.

Bill Riddell was in line for a third-place overall result in the closing minutes of the enduro only to suffer a flat right rear tire on his green No. 80 Cayman S that carries the white stripe livery of a David Piper Racing Porsche 917K. Riddell limped his stricken Cayman home and salvaged a third place Sportsman showing after crossing the finish line in pit lane.

Next up for the Pirelli Cayman Interseries Endurance Cup Championship at the Daytona Continental Historic Races is Sunday’s second and final sprint race of the weekend at 10:45 a.m. EST. Several Pirelli Cayman Interseries competitors also plan to compete in the weekend-ending Bob Snodgrass Enduro classic two hour race that is scheduled to start Sunday at 2 p.m. EST.
