The FG GROUP-promoted championship brought on-track a record-high 50 drivers including former Formula 1 aces like Tonio Liuzzi (Mercedes C63 AMG – Caal Racing), Gianni Morbidelli (Audi RS5 – Audi Sport Italia), Johnny Herbert (Maserati Quattroporte – Swiss Team), Christian Fittipaldi (Maserati Quattroporte – Swiss Team), Mika Salo (Maserati Quattroporte – Swiss Team), Christian Klien (Maserati Quattroporte – Swiss Team) and Giancarlo Fisichella (Maserati Quattroporte – Swiss Team).

Many international-level drivers joined the championship as well starting from young Swede Johan Kristoffersson, who won both the Italian Championship and the International Series aboard an Audi RS5 prepared by Audi Sport KMS. Thomas Schöeffler joined him under the German manufacturer's banner while British racer Tom Onslow-Cole (Jaguar XFR - Ferlito Motors) drove at Donington Park. Fellow Brit Jeff Smith raced for Team BMW Dinamic in Spa-Francorchamps while local hero Norbert Michelisz was fielded on a BMW M3 by Team Giudici in the Hungarian round of the series at the Hungaroring. Last but not least, Colombian Camilo Zurcher lined-up with impressive performance for Team Romeo Ferraris on a Mercedes C63 AMG.

More top-class talents fought for wins including BMW's Thomas Biagi. The Bologna-based man won two titles in 2010 and proved to be a contender again by taking the runner-up spot in the Italian Championship and third place in the International Series. Abruzzo-based man Francesco Sini (Chevrolet Lumina – Solaris Motorsport) and Tuscany's Andrea Larini (Mercedes C63 AMG – Romeo Ferraris) enjoyed great a season as they successfully cruised to win at Mugello. Veteran Max Pigoli also scored one win at Monza, driving a Jaguar XFR for Ferlito Motors.

The line-up of young drivers has been impressive starting from Kristoffersson, who also won the Rookie of the Year competition in front of same-powered Schöffler. Veneto-based Andrea Boffo left a great impression too. The 17-year-old scored his maiden podium finish at Imola on a Mercedes C63 AMG prepared by Roma Racing Team. In addition to them, 22-year-old Michele Faccin brought the Lexus brand back to SUPERSTARS at Vallelunga, while 16-year-old Marco Pollara drove a BMW for Todi Corse becoming the youngest drivers ever to join the series' roster at Pergusa.

Fourteen teams took part in the 2012 SUPERSTARS season, with Team BMW Dinamic eventually prevailing in the Salvatore Genovese Teams' Trophy. The cars lined-up by them covered nine different car manufacturers: Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Jaguar, Lexus, Maserati and Mercedes-Benz.

Record numbers came for SUPERSTARS also in terms of attendance, with 31.000 fans joining the series at Monza, 24.000 at Imola, 33.000 at Vallelunga and 25.000 at Pergusa. The fan base has been growing consistently thanks to a widespread TV distribution covering 195 territories, including 66 where the SUPERSTARS races are broadcasted live.
