2012 United States GP: Formula One (F1) Race Results - Hamilton, McLaren Win!
By Mike Sulka
In front of 110,000, Formula One F1 driver Lewis Hamilton and his No. 1 McLaren Mercedes made a late dramatic pass of Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) to win the 2012 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of Americas in Austin, Texas. For Hamilton, it is his fourth win of the 2012 Formula 1 F1 season, and 21st of his career. It is also his second win on U.S. soil having won the 2007 United States Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway five years ago.
For McLaren, it is the team's sixth win of the 2012 Formula One season, and 181st triumph all-time. Gordon Ramsey of Hell's Kitchen fame was in the garage to help the team celebrate.
For Sebastian Vettel, it is his 10th podium of the year. However, the important loss of seven valuable championship points can not be over stated.
Red Bull have won the constructor's championship for the third year in a row. Rumored to be worth nearly $100 million.
Fernando Alonso and his No. 5 Ferrari made a great start after Felipe Massa was intentionally sent rearward to advantage Alonso and give him a start on the clean side of the track. The team work proved crucial as Alonso finished on the podium, and limited the damage by Vettel's result. Alonso is just 13 points behind Vettel heading to Brazil.
Felipe Massa drove a great race to finish in P4. Since re-signed for 2013, the Ferrari veteran has driven extremely well, showing his pre-injury form that was of great value to Ferrari. Massa was in contention for the fastest lap of the race, which ultimately went to Vettel.
Jenson Button (McLaren) finished fifth, after starting on the prime tyre, and making the strategy work.
Kimi Raikkonen couldn't repeat his results at Abu Dhabi finishing sixth, followed by Romain Grosjean (Lotus), Nico Hulkenberg (Force India), Pastor Maldonado (Williams), and Bruno Senna (Williams).
Mark Webber was knocked from the race after another alternator problem. Going to Brazil, one wonders... How's Vettel's alternator ?
Up next, Formula One F1 will be headed to Sao Paulo, Brazil for the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix GP. It will be the season finale, and a champion will be crowned.
