NASCAR Number: 5 (Nov. 22, 2012)
By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service
5: In the so-called modern era of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing (1972 to date), the number of drivers who have won championships before turning 30. Jeff Gordon, the youngest champion in the past four decades, was 24 when he claimed the first of his four titles in 1995. Kurt Busch was 26 when he won the first Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup in 2004. Terry Labonte turned 28 two days before the final race of his 1984 championship season. Dale Earnhardt was 29 when he followed his 1979 rookie-of-the-year season with a championship in 1980, and Brad Keselowski won the 2012 title at age 28. Gordon, who won three championships before his 30th birthday, is the one driver in the modern era to win more than one before that milestone. Keselowski could change that, should he go back-to-back in 2013.
