NASCAR Number: 30 (Nov. 23, 2012)
By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service
30: Of the 36 NASCAR Sprint Cup races this season, the number in which Jimmie Johnson was running at the finish, a number that may help explain why Johnson fell short in his bid for a sixth Cup championship. That’s the lowest number since 2004, when Johnson was running at the finish of 29 of 36 races. Despite three straight engine failures—at Indianapolis, Watkins Glen and Michigan—and four overall, Johnson surged during the first Chase and finished a close second to champion Kurt Busch, just eight points back. Unlike in 2004, Johnson did not save his best work for the 2012 Chase, where his season ended with two straight failures—a melted bead on his right front tire at Phoenix and a rear gear problem in the season finale at Homestead.
