Dubai Autodrome To Host Action Packed Race Day This Weekend

Dubai Autodrome configuration hosts an action packed race weekend, with testing on Thursday and race day on Friday, featuring rounds of the NGK Racing Series, Motorcity UAE Sportbike Championship and Radical Winter Cup.

After their season opener at Yas Marina Circuit in October, the NGK Series campaigners are itching to get back on track with their first visit of the season to Dubai Autodrome, National Circuit configuration, where battles in Class 1, Class 2 and the Clio Cup will resume.

With Nabil Moutran, who won the two opening rounds in Abu Dhabi at the wheel of the Duel Racing SEAT Leon, opting to not run this weekend the spotlight will fall on the Class 1 battle between multiple UAE champion Costas Papantonis in the Gulf Petrochem backed SEAT and Brian McGinley in the Phoenix Motorsport Opel Astra

In Class 2 double winner at Yas, Rupesh Channake will be out to maintain his winning streak in the Lap 57 Honda, with Jonathan Mullen challenging in his Honda Integra. The Honda duo will have to fend off the Renault Clio brigade consisting of Gulf Petrochem backed reigning champion Alexandros Annivas, opening round winner Ramzi Moutran, Will Morrison and Leon Johnson.

The Renault Clio boys also competing for ‘race-within-a-race’ Clio Cup honours.

Adding spice to the day will be Leon Price and Rob Barff, who will run their potent Ferrari 458 Italia as part of their preparations ahead of January’s Dunlop 24 Hours of Dubai.

An impressive Motorcity UAE Sportbike field will line-up on the grid, for round three and round four of the championship, on their second race day of the season.

Last time out, earlier this month, last season’s Rookie Cup winner Surya Raja started his campaign with two sensational wins in the 600 Class on his Yamaha, while reigning UAE Sportbike champion Mahmoud Tannir failed to finish one race and was runner-up to Raja in the other.

Tannir, on the Duseja Moto Triumph, will be out to set the record straight and reassert his authority on the series which he dominated in his champion year and thus setting the scene for an action packed two races on the day.

This year there are several riders capable of winning including the likes of Joe Oxley who is coming to terms with his Ducati after seasons of running a Kawasaki and Rob Nicholas who has made a welcome return to the series on a Triumph, his experience on 1000cc machines should serve him well as the season progresses.

The popular Rookie Class which last year produced the likes of pace setting Raja, again has unearthed some talented riders of which Dominik van Poelnitz is already raising eyebrows after his double win at the season opener on a Suzuki. He faces a stern challenge and will be chased hard by fellow debutants Nasir Hussain Syed (Suzuki), Neil Hawke (Kawasaki) and Giuseppe Marraffa (Yamaha).

In the invitational 1000 Class, last time out, Abdulaziz Binladen was simply untouchable aboard his BMW S1000R. The Saudi ace spent the past year competing in the highly rated British Superbikes and is oozing confidence on ‘home’ soil. Also in the running will be the likes of fellow BMW rider Nasser Al Shaiba, Kawasaki mounted Alan Boyter and Gregory Fitzgerald on a Honda.

The weekend also sees the 2012-2013 Radical Winter Cup returning to the Dubai Autodrome for round 2 of the UAE national series.

The two 45-minutes mini-enduro style races will feature both the Radical SR3 Class and the more powerful 435 BHP SR8 Class where Bassam Kronfli set down a marker in the opening round at Yas Marina Circuit, but this weekend will be tested by Jordan Grogor who returns to the series sharing the cockpit with young Qatari driver Sheikh Abdulrahman Al Thani.

Coupled to the arrival of the HHC team out of the UK, the small but very competitive SR8 Class promises to offer some very close racing.

The SR3 Class sees a number of Middle East drivers competing including Mohammed Jawa in the Q8 Team car and Hassan Dargahi supported by Slipstream Racing. The pair scored one victory apiece at Yas and can be expected to be up at the front again. Qatari driver Amro Al Hamad will be aiming to get back on the podium as he did last time out, but this time he is targeting the top step.

Also expected to be competitive in the SR3 Class are the EMAL Racing Team entry of Graeme Hannah and Mark Jordan. Although only in their first season of racing in the Radical Winter Cup, the team is already showing promise.

Aschkan Abdul Malek who hails from Kurdistan and who is also in his rookie season in the Radical series and is expected bounce back following the disappointment of mechanical issues which plagued his opening day at Yas.

Race day on Friday (30 November) starts with qualifying at 09.00 am for the NGK Racing Series, followed by qualifying for Motor4city UAE Sportbikes and Radical Winter Cup, with the first race scheduled to start at 11.00 am. Also on the bill are two track day session for motorcycle riders, with first of the half hour sessions slated for 15.05 pm on the day.

Attendance for UAE National raced days is free, with access to grandstand and paddock where fans can get up close to competitors and their machines. Food and beverages will be available at the Pitstop Lounge, in the paddock area, throughout the day.
