NASCAR Number: 5 (Nov 28, 2012)

NASCAR Number: 5 (Nov 28, 2012)

By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service

5: In honor of Champion’s Week in Las Vegas, the number of times a driver has won a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and has gone on to win the Cup championship in the same year. Jimmie Johnson accounts for three of those seasons, winning three times at LVMS (2006, 2007 and 2010) during his streak of five straight titles. Jeff Gordon, Johnson’s teammate at Hendrick Motorsports, accomplished the feat in 2001 when he won the fourth of his four championships. Matt Kenseth did it in 2003 in winning the last championship before the advent of the Chase. Carl Edwards probably deserves an asterisk here, too. Edwards won at Vegas in 2011 and finished in a dead heat for the title with Tony Stewart—but lost it on a tiebreaker.
