There are 83 days left before the Feb. 24 Daytona 500. Accordingly, the number for today is: 83: The car number of the Wynn’s Oldsmobile that Lake Speed drove to his only victory in NASCAR’s premier series. Speed won the 1988 TranSouth 500 at Darlington by a whopping 18.8 seconds over Alan Kulwicki but never again found his way to Victory Lane. In a career that spanned 19 seasons, Speed posted 16 top fives and 75 top 10s in 402 Cup starts. And, no, he is not related to current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Scott Speed.
