Countdown To Daytona For Tuesday, Dec 4
By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service
82: A car number that has been a study in futility in NASCAR’s foremost series. The number 82 made its first appearance, and achieved one of its best results, in the 1950 Southern 500 at Darlington, where Fireball Roberts drove it to a second-place finish. Roberts, however, ran only three races in the 82; in 1951, the number fell to Joe Eubanks, who finished second four times between 1951 and 1961, inclusive. The number was idle for 18 years from 1991 until 2009, when Scott Speed drove the No. 82 Toyota in the Sprint Cup Series for Red Bull Racing. All told, the 82 has started 349 races without a visit to Victory Lane.
