Countdown To Daytona For Sunday, Dec 16
By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service
There are 70 days left before the Feb. 24, 2013, Daytona 500; hence, the number for today is:
70: The star-crossed car number that has made the most starts in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (760) without winning a race. Journeyman owner/driver J.D. McDuffie ran the No. 70 for 25 years, from 1966 until 1991. He was involved in an accident in 1991 at Watkins Glen International, which led to the construction of the inner loop at the road course to slow the cars as they enter Turn 5. McDuffie died as result of his injuries. In the race, Richard Petty finished ninth, notching the last of his 712 career top fives. The No. 70 remained inactive for the next 15 years.
