Countdown to Daytona, Dec. 30, 2012
By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service
There are 56 days left before the Feb. 24, 2013 Daytona 500; hence the number for today is:
56: A car number that made its NASCAR debut at the Daytona Beach & Road Course in 1950. Joe Jernigan drove the No. 56 Ford to a 22nd-place finish that year, earning $25 for his efforts. In 253 starts in NASCAR’s top series, the No. 56 has gone to Victory Lane once—after Jim Hurtubise took the checkered flag in a Plymouth at Atlanta in 1966. For the past three seasons—after a 17-year hiatus for the number--Martin Truex Jr. has driven the No. 56 Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing and has earned one pole per year in the car.
