Countdown to Daytona, Jan. 5, 2013

There are 50 days left before the Feb. 24, 2013 Daytona 500; hence, today’s number is:
50: The number of victories in what is now the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series recorded by Junior Johnson and Ned Jarrett, both of whom have been inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Jarrett won two Cup driving championships, in 1961 and 1965. Johnson never won the title as a driver, but he can claim six championships as a car owner, three each with Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip. Johnson won the second running of the Daytona 500 in 1960, beating Bobby Johns to the finish line by 23 seconds. Jarrett never won a points race at Daytona, leaving that distinction to his son, Dale Jarrett, who has three Daytona 500 victories to his credit.
