The Dakar Rally 2013 is underway. And as a good start is half the job, it looks good for Peter van Merksteijn senior.
He finished the first stage in position sixteen, the fastest Dutchman.

Not more than thirteen kilometers in lenght the first special counted, a warm-up at the end of the stage from
Lima to Pisco in Peru. A short special through the desert, but with thousands of enthusiastic spectators at the
side of the track. The Dakar Rally in South America is alive and kicking! An extra boost for the drivers, though
during this first test there was not great deal at stake. "It was a great special for warming-up”, said Van Merksteijn.
Without taking risks he sent the Toyota through the sand dunes, expertly navigated by Eddy Chevaillier.
"In the loose sand the car had a lot of traction. This is very promising for the coming days.
" For Sunday, January 6 a longer leg through the desert around Pisco is on the schedule.
The special is 242 kilometres in length.
