Successful Showing At The 27th Annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals For Australian Driver Alex Orr

The new car, new track, and new country had no effect on Alex Orr during the 27th Annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Okla. Having left his home country of Australia for the first time in his life, the 19-year-old driver showed no signs of nervousness as he competed throughout the week.

Orr’s qualifying night was Thursday, January 10th and the young driver backed up a seventh-place run in his heat race with a second-place effort in the C Main after becoming the first driver in the Mark Bush stables to lead laps during this year’s Chili Bowl week. Unfortunately, an unavoidable wreck early in the B Main hindered Orr’s abilities to transfer to the A Main that evening.

“Everything about this experience was completely new to me from the car to the track to the team, even being in a different country,” said Orr. “But, I made sure to learn as much as possible on the practice day and it paid off when I went out for my heat race. By gaining more seat time during that race I was really ready to show what I could do in the C Main and it felt great to lead laps at such a historic facility here in America. I wish my luck had been better in the B Main but we used the rest of the race as another test session for Saturday’s features.”

Based on his performance Thursday evening, Orr started sixth in the first of two H Mains on Saturday, January 12th. A rough and tumble 10-lap race did not leave much of an opportunity for Orr to race his way to a transfer position.

“I definitely wish I could have done more in the H Main on Saturday,” said Orr. “But, finishing just outside the top ten was still a victory for us since the entire situation was brand new. The Chili Bowl is such an auspicious event that it was an honor to merely compete and we hope to be back next year to try and improve on our efforts this year. I would like to thank the fans who came out throughout the week. The fans make it possible for us to do this and I am grateful for each and every one.”

Orr has since returned home to Sydney and, being that it is summer in Australia currently, he has several more races planned back home this year and may even attempt another trip to America to get behind the wheel of some other types of cars.
