Walden Tests Chevy Monte Carlo

Ahead of Stock Cars Australia (SCA) official launch at Wakefield Park during the first round of the 2013 MRA Series on 26/27 January, SCA Co-ordinator Brian Walden tested his recently imported Chevy Monte Carlo at Wakefield Park on Wednesday.

Walden was absolutely delighted with the way the car performed straight out of the box, or shipping container. Walden turned in around 25 laps, and his son Garth also had a drive, doing four laps and was also very impressed.

“We imported the Chevy from Ricky Sanders Racing from Georgia in June, straight after it finished its final race in a GTA Transam Series in second place, and this was the first time we’d driven it. Our biggest surprise was how quiet it was.

“We were doing six laps runs at a time. It was better in a lot of ways than I expected,” Walden said. It turns in well, very well, it was hard at first to pick up apexes as it was the first time that I’ve raced a left hand drive car and we really only needed a couple of runs before I got the hang of it.

“We really wanted to find out what the car likes. I wanted it to do certain things, but it wanted to do others, though in the finish we agreed,” he laughed. But really, we learned a lot. The only problems we had was when it developed a misfire, but that was only a plug lead loose. The brakes were the only major issue, but we have a few things to work through there.

After the test, he said they purposely didn’t time a lap, but pushed for a time, said he thought it would be doing 06’s.

Walden is a seasoned campaigner with four decades of racing behind him. He is experienced in several categories, mainly in sports sedans but he has also raced V8 Supercars, firstly as a driver where he finished 16th on debut in the Bathurst 1000, then as a team-owner. That was followed by production Car racing where he won his class on two occasions driving a Holden Commodore VZ in the Bathurst 12 hour.

After setting up the MRA (Motor Racing Australia) Series which he built into being one of the nation’s most popular motor racing series’, he turned to the Stock Car racing, and will run the inaugural four round series this year at Wakefield Park for Stock Cars and Oz Truck Utes, starting on the Wakefield Park 300 support card on March 2/3, where the format will be qualifying ahead of two 15 lap races and a 20 lap Feature event.

The upcoming launch at the MRA round, will start on Saturday 26 January where a ‘Speed Off the Streets Day” will be conducted, and the SCA cars and Oz Truck Utes will do an on track demonstration during the afternoon.

Then on Sunday, they will be competing in the Sports Sedan events, which will feature qualifying and three races. Whilst off track the cars will be on display in garages 1 – 5.
